Back then, a part of me wanted to believe it was true.

That my parents were taking me outside for the first time in fifteen years, out of the goodness of their hearts, because they had finally seen what they were doing wrong and wanted to start over. The sunshine was something so beautiful, felt so amazing on my skin, something that I’d longed to go into for years while I watched my siblings playing outside from the windows of my chambers.

My skin was a pale, creamy white from the lack of sunlight, and my hair filled with light brown locks that I hated looking at. Most of the time my skin was covered in blue and purple scars that my parents wouldn’t allow me to heal. I had done something wrong, and I couldn’t even remember what.

I was practically being dragged through the market, people walking by without a care as if this was normal for them to see.

“D-Dad?” I had mumbled, still trying to adjust my eyesight to the brightness that peered above us.

He had seemed annoyed, a scowl growing on his face as he continue to drag me along the dirt road market, by my left arm.

I gulped and tried to speak to him again. “D-Dad?”

This time he stopped in his tracks, his face red with anger before he backhanded me so hard it busted my lip open and I could taste the italic flavor of blood in a matter of seconds. I knew my face would soon start to swell up, as tears started to build in my eye sockets.

“Don’t you ever call me that, Galen. How many times must I tell you, boy?” He snapped, glaring at me behind his icy blue eyes.

He had grabbed me by my left wrist again, but tighter, surely leaving marks that I had to stare at for weeks, a reminder of the stinging, raging pain of it all. Turns out—believe it or not—my dad wasn’t taking me on a merry go road around the city, he wasn’t taking me to show me the world and get a breath of fresh air like my siblings get to do every day. No, not for me.

My nightmare-like memories were wiped from my thoughts as I felt someone shaking me softly, waking me up from something I’d rather not relive.

We got out the van, and I lugged my few bags inside onto the campus, May following close behind me, reviewing the pamphlets and records for me. the sun was blazing as it would any day in the middle of August in the south. Something that I loved to much, I savored every day I was free to walk outside as I pleased.

My hair was out and casually ruffled like it always was, the chestnut brown color was now filled with blonde streaks here and there thanks to the sunlight deeming down on it, giving it it's true color. I was wearing my usual navy blue tee-shirt with some khaki shorts and sneakers. Nothing special or fancy, not that I had much that was special or fancy anyways.

“Galen, remember what you’re here to do.  Know this must be overwhelming because you’re only sixteen, but I know you can do it, okay? I know you don’t like to be reminded at all of your past, but it’s not something you should let saturate in your mind. I signed you up for short group classes with the academy’s guidance counselor.”
