As we sat on the stage shrouded in darkness, I could feel my tension ease. My wrists pressed against the cold wood of my guitar, soothing the cuts. Those are the last ones I promised myself, and in the back of my mind, I knew that this time, I would keep that promise. In my earpiece, I could hear the producer counting down to our cue. I looked over at Kate, and smiled. She answered back with an even bigger smile.
“This is it,” I whispered, grabbing her hand and squeezing it a little. She didn’t speak, but she responded with a small squeeze.
5…4…3…2…1 I heard the producer count down. At one, I strummed the first note on my guitar, as Kate’s voice broke the silence.
"When the days are cold / And the cards all fold / And the saints we see / Are all made of gold,” she began, her last word in perfect time with the gold lights that suddenly flooded the building.
"When your dreams all fail / And the ones we hail / Are the worst of all / And your blood runs stale," I joined in, searching for Alex’s face in the audience. I found him sitting next to my mom. They were both smiling back at me.
"I wanna hide the truth / I wanna shelter you / But with the beast inside / There's nowhere we can hide," we sang together, and out of the corner of my eye I could see six people walk on the stage, their backs to the crowd. I knew what they were there for, but I could see the curious looks in the audience. I smiled to myself.
"No matter what we breed / We still are made of greed / This is my kingdom come / This is is my kingdom come," I sang alone.
Kate opened her mouth to begin the chorus, but it was then that a horrible screeching sound filled the building. I glanced at Kate, but she had paused, not knowing what to do. The entire scene changed as I opened my eyes, my hand coming crashing down on my alarm clock.
Today was the day, audition day.
