Chapter 1

     "Class please kindly welcome Alexander Hamilton. He has traveled from the Caribbean to join our class so I expect you to be nice to him. Alexander, please take your seat."  

     After hearing this from my new third grade teacher, Mr. Washington, I toyed with the hem of my t-shirt, staring nervously out to my new class. Reluctantly, I hobbled forward next to a desk that was labeled 'Alexander'. Sitting down in my chair, I looked to the person to my left; a kid with a poofy mess of frizzy brown hair, scowling at me. I quickly looked away.

     To my right was a young woman, petite and happy. She wore a laced white blouse and a blue skirt, and had a braid of dark brown hair. She looked to me and smiled, so I naturally smiled back. 

     "Now, class, I'd like you to all introduce yourselves to Alexander. Starting with you, John." Mr. Washington pointed to a boy in the very back of the room with curly brown hair in a ponytail. 

     "I'm John Laurens." The boy said, and played with a little turtle locket that was attached to a chain around his neck. He looked slightly flustered. 

     The young boy next to him smiled at me from across the room. "I'm Hercules Mulligan." He wore a blue bandanna around his head. 

      A few more children were called, until we got to the last one, the boy to my left.
