"Ah, now to open this year, I'd like to introduce the newest members of the Rouxe family. Please welcome our youngest recruit yet, Maddox!" A short, stout man announced over a crowd of people, holding up the arm of a boy, not much older than 19. The crowd roared and clawed at the makeshift stage.
"Settle down!" The man shouted once more. "This young man is being assigned to one of you from each section each day. We are going to see where he fits in, and get him trained in that place. We will start today with those. Derrek, you'll be tagging with the kid today. Maxim, you'll have him tomorrow, and Yang the last day. And lastly," he said, turning behind him to face a child, a boy no older than 12. "Ferris, you'll have Maddox the third day. I don't want him to be left with you for very long."
The boy nodded stiffly as he looked up from his video game.
"You all know your places. Disperse!" The man shouted and shooed everyone but Maddox, Derrek and Ferris from the room
"Sir," Maddox stuttered out. "I'm still a bit foggy on..."
"No worries my new friend!" Derrek said enthusiastically as he leaned on Maddox's shoulder. "I'll help you clear all that up, just follow me"
He led Maddox to a small room that smelled of dank and death.
"Here we are!" Derrek said, slamming the door. "Welcome to my house, mi casa es su casa or whatever that saying is. Anyways Maddox, I'd love for you to work with me, mostly 'cause my last partner, you know..." he slid his finger over his neck and made a cracking sound.
"Is this place like a morgue or something?" Maddox questioned nervously.
"Heh," Derrek laughed. "...of sorts"
Derrek led Maddox around a series of rooms and dark tunnels, explaining that he worked down here taking the bodies and trying to make sure that they had killed the right people as well as getting rid of all evidence and any witnesses or contact to anyone related to the person.
At about one o'clock, or maybe two or three, Derrek stopped for a lunch break at his office, a small building off of the main passages with flickering fluorescent lights and a small refrigerator and freezer.
"So Derrek, what was your life like before you joined the Rouxe family?" Maddox asked lightly. Derrek leapt across the table and slammed his hand over his mouth, a bit too violently.
"Look, since it's only your first day and you've never been told this, I'll let you off with a warning. Never, and I mean never, speak of life before the mafia. You never know if anyone's listening, and you never know who's gonna turn on ya."
Maddox leaned back, looking apologetic and scared. "It's not you who's going to turn on me. Right?" Maddox said slowly and quietly.
"I told you kid, I'm letting you off with a warning here. And no matter how bloody things around here get, and even if you don't decide to join me down here, I'll be your solid. I'll be the one to take care of ya when you're sick, I'll be the one you can always go to for almost anything at all. I'll be like your makeshift father. I never got the chance to settle and have a family. My own father was taken by this mafia because he got scrambled in some messed up shit somewhere along the line. Big man felt sorry for me, leaving me an orphan and so I worked for my meals down here in the morgue. In short kid, I've got your back."
Derrek looked exhausted from telling his story. Maddox cleared his throat and slid closer to Derrek, wrapping his arm around his shoulders.
"If it makes you feel any better, I know exactly what you mean. My brother, my big bro got tangled in some scandal that somehow traced back to Rouxe. My dad left when he found out that my mom was selling herself online to make money and accidentally got pregnant with me. My mom left when my brother turned 19 and told us she couldn't stand seeing me anymore. So like in your case, the Big man took me and told me to work for him or die."
"Awww kid I'm so sorry."
Maddox smiled weakly and shrugged.
"Shit!" Derrek exclaimed, hopping up from his chair. "It's been over an hour, we gotta get to work! Let's go Maddox."
