Chapter 1 :
I guess I should be happy to return to school this fall. After all my summer had been filled with nothing but training anyways. I love my parents, I really do. But you would think they could lay off on all the guardian training. Of course they couldn't train me all summer or else they would have had to abandon there charges, which I know they wouldn't do. Most of the time my mom just brought Lissa with her so that we could train. Lissa didn't mind watching and she liked talking to me about how I'm doing. But when I'm not training with my mom, I'm training with my dad. It's not that I don't like training with my dad, but when my dad comes, Christian follows. Christian is Lissa's husband and also my dad's charge. I like Christian, but he is very good at picking out secrets. Christian helps me with my magic the most. Lissa tries but with her element being spirit she can't help me much. Plus Christian is better with offensive magic. The only problem is my parents don't approve of me using magic at all. They don't like it when I start to act anything like the Moroi. Of course, they can't stop me from being who I am... Which is a mystery to us all. You see, I shouldn't exists. Both of my parents are dhampir. Which should have made it impossible for them to procreate with eachother. But almost 17 years ago our close family friends -who also happen to be spirit users- found a way for my parents to have a child. I was the miracle baby that was supposed to be kept a secret . To everyone else, I am the adopted -dhampir- daughter of Rose Hathaway and Dimirti Belikov. Very few people know the truth. Including my best friend Josh. Lissa and Christians son -a Moroi- the same age as me. He is the only one at St. Vladimir academy who knows the -very confusing- truth. My parents don't want me in school because they think of it as too much of a security risk. They don't want my secret out. But I don't mind sneaking around to keep my Moroi side satisfied. Like most Moroi I need blood to stay healthy, but I don't need it nearly as much as a normal Moroi does, but when I do need blood I simply come with Josh to the feeders and take my pick. It's simple really, my fangs come and go as I please so it isn't even hard to keep under control.
"Klara" I jerk my head to the side as I hear my name. I see that my dad at my bedroom door leaning against the frame. "Yeah?" I ask simply as I finish off my packing, and close my suitcase. "Josh just got here so we are leaving court soon to drop you guys off at the airport." I nodded. "Is mom coming to see me off?" My dad frowned but stayed where he was. "No, your mom and Lissa have some business to take care of here at court." I looked down avoiding his eyes. "When don't they.." I mumble to myself. He shifts his weight at the door and hesitates before speaking. "You know she is trying her best to see you Klara, but with Lissa being queen, she has to stay in high alert." This annoys me. I whip around so I'm facing him. "You've been using that same excuse since I was 5 dad! Lissa could have 50 guardians on her if she wanted! But mom couldn't come to see me off to school when she knows she won't see me for the next 6 months!?" I stand there looking at my dad. He seemed unfazed. Instead of getting mad at me he sighed. "Your not the only one who doesn't get to see her you know." We stood there for a moment. I examined his face, I know he loves mom. Maybe I was being selfish. After a moment, he speaks up again as he walks over to me, and grabs my bag. "Josh is waiting." I nod as he stepped out of the room.
As I walk down the hall after my dad I soon see Josh waiting patiently in our living room. I smile when I see him. Josh has dirty blonde hair that matches his moms, but he has the same ice blue eyes as his father. Which I was told was strange because generally Dragomir children carried the jade green eyes along with them. Josh walked over and we hugged briefly. There had never been anything romantic between Josh and I, but we had known each other our whole lives and we practically family. "Hey" I said with a smile as we pull apart. "Hey" he said. "You ready to go?" He asked with a smirk. "As ready as I can be." He nodded and turned to the door. "Where's Christian?" I asked as Josh led me to the door. Of course as soon as I opened the door I saw him leaning on the hood of the black SUV we would be taking to the airport. He smiled at me as we approached, I returned his smile with a hug. "Uncle Christian!" We aren't really related, but we might as well have been. "Klara, nice to see you again." I nodded. My parents claim the Christian has gone soft over the years and lost most of his sarcasm skills. But right now I think he is just truly sincere. Christian looked over at my dad. "Shall we go then?" He nodded as Christian tossed over the car keys to my dad. Josh and I got into the backseat and waited for the car to start moving before starting to talk. "So how have you been?" It was an innocent question. It's hard to talk In front of our parents. "I've been.." I considered this before answering. "I've been good" he nodded. "that's good." "and you?" I asked. "I've been fine" he shot a glance at his father knowing to wait until we were out of the car to start talking. After a minute of silence Christian speaks up. "Burr" he says with false enthusiasm. "I know it's been a month since you've seen each other, but shouldn't you have more to say to each other then that?" I looked away not acknowledging what he had said. Josh and I had gotten in trouble a while ago, our parents were determined to keep us apart at all costs for fear we would destroy all of court. But I know they are hiding something from me. And Josh. The car stayed silent all the way to the airport.
When we got to the airport it was almost midnight. Josh and I got out of the car and said our goodbyes. Neither of us had much to say to our dads after that. But once we were seated on the plane together we looked at each other and started laughing. "How long do you think it will take for them to notice?" I asked. "Probably 30 minutes" he said between laughs. Josh and I has set up a little surprise for our parents in the car. As our laughter died down, Josh and I started talking as if we had never been separated. We asked stupid questions like 'have you asked her out yet?' Even though there was never a particular someone, I still liked testing josh about how the girls swooned over him. We told story's about how stupid out parents looked while they we punishing us for all the things we had done this summer. We practically laughed the whole time until the fight landed and we were able to turn our phones back on and received about 100 messages each from our very angry fathers. We laughed exchanging each others phones reading the funniest threats. Our laughing came to a halt ask someone we both knew very well drove up in a silver Mercedes. Adrian stepped out of the car and walked over to us "Welcome back Little dhampir."
