When I woke up, Kane wasn't in the room. It still felt weird knowing I could see him and touch him. I still felt cautious whenever I had to have my own moments. Before stepping out of the shower I peeked out making sure he wasn't being a peeping tom.
I changed into comfortable clothes. I didn't exactly know what I would be doing today, but I had a feeling it would consist of a lot of walking.
When I was finally in my room I slipped on my black combat boots and laced them up. I was slipping on a grey sweater when I caught a glimpse of Kane through the body mirror resting against my wall.
"Your mother is impatiently waiting for you downstairs." Kane told me.
"Do you always spy on people when you have nothing to do?" I asked, turning around to face him.
"Remember what I told you last night. Pretend as though you don't remember."
"Yeah, I got that." I said.
I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs. Like Kane said, my mom was waiting for me in the kitchen. When she saw me she looked suddenly nervous. She had a plate set up for me and a glass of orange juice.
"Good morning." She said. "I made you breakfast."
"I'm not hungry."
"Are you sure? You didn't eat much last night."
I was going to tell her that I didn't eat anything at all when I remembered what Kane said. She was throwing the bait at me.
"I wasn't hungry." I shrugged.
"You didn't come down from your room all evening. What were you doing?"
"What are you talking about? I was doing homework. Why are you being so weird?" I asked.
"I'm simply asking. I know you've been having a hard time adjusting. I just want you to know I'm here for you. No matter what."
I went to the refrigerator and grabbed an apple and a pop. I wasn't going to touch anything she gave me unless someone else ate it too. I didn't trust my mom. She had given me enough reasons not to.
"Yeah. Okay." I said brushing her off. "I'm going out. I'll be back later."
I was already walking away when she stopped me. "Where are you going?"
"Not that you actually care, but I'm going to hang out with Stella. She's a friend from school." I said. "See ya!"
Before she could say anything else I rushed out. Freya was coming down the stairs. She gave me a sneer and it ticked me off. I really didn't like her even though she was my family.
Freya turned to walk away. I had only thought about it when she stumbled over her own two feet. I was thinking about how much I wish she would just trip and fall. She didn't fall but she was so close to it. Her eyes turned to me as if though she knew what I had tried to do.
I quickly walked out and closed the door behind me. Kane was outside waiting for me while frowning and shaking his head. He obviously saw my attempt to use magic.
"Don't expose yourself to your family." He said as we walked.
"It's not a big deal."
"To you it isn't. They can strip your magic away. Don't ever forget that."
"I know, I'm sorry. I'll be more careful." I promised. "She just gets under my skin, you know?"
"I had a brother." Kane nodded.
