"Lexi girl!" Nathan, my best friend in the whole world, calls my name.
"Yes?" I smile.
"Today's the one year anniversary!" He smiles, and his blue eyes sparkle. Before you ask, no. We're not dating. I don't have time for boyfriends; I need to focus on my reports and college prep-classes and everything else. I don't even want to go to Senior Prom, although Nate insists that I go as his date.
"The one year anniversary of what?"
"One year ago today was the day you rejected me 54 times in a row for Junior Prom. You will go with me to Senior!" Ugh. Why must he be so persistent? I know, I know. I should give him a chance, with him being the only guy I'd actually consider. All the rest of them are jocks and jerks that don't care.
"Sorry. The only way I'm going to Prom is if some magical elf came down and brought one of my book characters to life. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go see what happens to Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters!" Yes, I'm reading "The Fault In Our Stars". I love this book so much. John Green is pure genius!
"Oh, fine. I have to get to Trigonometry. Later, Lex! MY BEAUTIFUL PROM DATE!!" All the guys turn and look at me. Shoot. I didn't want this attention this morning.
"Lexi is NOT going to Prom, guys." One guy looks at me and smiles. He has black hair and hazel/blue eyes. He transferred two weeks ago; who would start at a new high school 4 months before the end of senior year? Beats me. But hey, he is a tad bit cute. His name's Luke Sanders. Yes, the shy, mysterious guy that no one knows anything about.
"Lexi?"
"I already said, I'm not going to Prom!" I look up and see Luke staring at me. "Luke! Sorry, I thought you were Nate." He blushes, and looks down.
"Is he your boyfriend?"
"Who? Nate? Oh god no. He and I have been friends since we were in diapers. So, just like all the classic novels, the guy and girl usually date and fall in love in high school and go to Prom and everything-" Luke stops me.
"But not you two. Right?" I nod. "I love books, too. They're my way to esca-um; I really must go. Bye, Lex. Wait, no. Nate calls you 'Lex', so I will call you....Lexandria." I blush, and nod.
"See you, Luke." I walk back to my locker, and get my glasses. I put them on, and some football player comes up to me.
"I saw you talking to Luke. Stay away from him; you're mine. Stay away from that flirt, Nate, too." I fold my eyebrows and scowl.
"Nathan is my best friend; you're the flirt. Every guy at this school is a flirt. And I'm not your girl. I don't belong to anybody. And don't insult Nate again. Or Luke. They're so much better than you and your group of jocks." I shut my locker, and walk off to College Algebra.
After Algebra's over, it's time for lunch. The cafeteria is a mad house; seriously, I'm surprised the Joker isn't one of the cooks. I sit down in a corner by myself, and pull out TFIOS. I'm at the part where Gus goes into chemo for his cancer that has returned. All of a sudden, I hear someone sniffling. Jesus, can't anyone cry at their house? But then I realize that it's me. I put the book in my bag and eat my sandwich that has peanut butter and bananas on it.
"Hey, Lexandria." I smile, and look up to find Luke.
"Hi, Luke. What's up?"
"Just eating lunch, trying to figure out what it is about the girls at this school. They all go for the dumb jocks that don't care."
I clear my throat. "Not all of the girls." He smiles, and lets out a little chuckle.
"Sorry. I forgot that you're not like them." Seconds later, I see one of the jocks come up behind Luke and pull him out of his chair.
