I close my book once finished and glance at the time.
Crap! It's 4 am and I have to be awake at 6 to make the bus.
Should I stay awake or go back to sleep?
Staying awake is going to kill me for the whole day yet I know I will most likely never wake up if I go to sleep.
I get out of my bed one foot at a time and feel the coldness of winter on my hardwood floors. I walk to my collections of books and debate which ones to start or re-read. I glance over at my comfy reading chair and notice a target bag full of books. I look through the bag and pull out the Tlc graphic novel. I walk back to my bed and sit down to read. I was near completing the book when my 6am alarm scares me. I let out a quiet scream and get ready for school. Yawning I walk downstairs to my kitchen to heat up a bagel. My older sister whom was siting at the table prior to my arrival noticed my dark circles.
"Stayed up all night to read again?" My sister asked
I nodded knowing my mother would be furious. Like she always says, tired students usually don't focus and when you aren't focused you don't pay attention and get bad grades.
I pull my bagel out of the toaster and hear my moms soft footsteps coming down the stairs.
My sister assumed my mom was going to be upset and talk to me so she slipped out of the kitchen unoticed.
I turn the oppisite direction trying not to yawn and hide my tired appearance.
"Why didn't you go to bed last night?" My mother asked.
Crap, she knew. I shrugged and took a sip of my milk.
"I went to let the Cocoa (our dog) out at midnight and noticed your reading light was on from the soft glow under the door." My mom said loading her cup with coffee "I let it be and checked back on you at 3 am and heard you fumbling with the pages."
I looked down at my half eaten bagel and waited for my punishment.
Instead my mom placed a mug filled with coffee infront of me on the table.
"Aren't you gonna punish or ground me?" I asked nevously
My mom chuckled "No, I thought about it but I was once like you. I would read at the late hours and get little sleep."
My eyes widened since I always thought I was very different than her.
My mother smiled and told me to drink my coffee and get ready for school.

{At School}

Whenever I get the chance in my class I pull out a book from my bag.
Other kids throw names at me like weirdo and freak because I like to read but honestly I don't care.
I've only gotten caught reading twice and frankly it's embarrasing.
I read at lunch, on the bus, in the locker room. Whenever I have a spare moment I read.

Today, instead of taking the bus home I walk to the local bookstore. I breathe a sigh of relief as the heat warms my cold, red face.
I browse through the new book section and pick my favorites.
I walk to the checkout and see the older woman who knows me very well since I shop there almost everyweek.
"You're total is $55.84 Emily" The woman says
My eyes widen, I had only brought $45 but I remembered I picked from the new section not the clearance
"I don't have enough" I mumble with a sad tone "I will but some back."
"Nonsense" Says the woman "I will pay and I have a surprise for you."
"Thank you so much!" I say lightening up "I'll repay you next week" I say writing the cost I needed to give her on my phone
"I don't think that will be nessicary" She says "You can pay me back in reading those books because I rarely see teens as enthusiastic about reading as you are. "
I smile and watch as she puts a small stack of books on the counter.
"These are older classics for you to keep. They were donations from someone who was trying to clean out their shelves" The lady says winking at me. "My name is Mrs. Windfield or Maria if you'd like. "
"Maria you've made my day so much better" I say walking around the counter and hugging her.
I thank her again and make my way home smiling like a fool.
