Rhys needed a job. He kept getting fired from all of his other ones, and cash was the only thing on his mind. No job meant no apartment, and he really needed his apartment. He went around applying to jobs, but nothing really seemed to be working. Until his buddy Vaughn called him up one day. Vaughn worked for a company called Hyperion, and apparently they needed a new assistant for their boss, Jack. People called him Handsome Jack though. Of course Rhys applied for the job, he needed this.
So Rhys got dressed as in his best clothing and set off for the interview. Vaughn helped guide him through the vicinity, to Handsome Jack's office. On the way to his office, Vaughn offered some advice to Rhys.
"Okay so first of all, Handsome Jack tries to get in your head, so don't believe much of anything he says alright?" Vaughn began.
"Oh...Kay?" Rhys seemed confused. He didn't bother asking any questions though.
"Second of all, do not look him in the eyes, he hates that. That's why his previous assistant uh... Quit."
"Define quit."
"Well, let's just say that he uh, he's swimming with the fishes."
"What? He's fucking dead?" Rhys stopped, his eyes widening.
"They still haven't found the body."
"Well thats... Alarming."
"Yeah no kidding." Vaughn replied. "Oh and one last thing."
"Yeah?"
"Do not ask questions. That's the biggest thing. He--"
"Let me guess, he hates questions." Rhys interrupted.
"Bingo." The two arrived at Jack's door, and Vaughn turned to Rhys, grasping his shoulders. "Good luck buddy, you're gonna need a lot of it."
"Thanks. I guess I'll see you in a bit if my brains aren't blown out by the time this interview is over."
"I'm sure you'll be fine. Knock 'em dead Rhys." Vaughn smiled, and Rhys took a deep breath, taking a seat in the waiting room. Jack's secretary looked up from her desk at Rhys and pressed the buzzer.
"Someone's here to see you sir." She said, her voice monotonous and dull.
"Send him in." Jack's voice came through. The lady looked at Rhys.
"He'll see you now." Rhys stood up and went up to Jack's office door, taking a deep breath.
The lady seemed to notice Rhys' nervousness. "He hates waiting, I'd get in there if I were you."
"He seems to hate a lot of things, doesn't he." Rhys grumbled, heading into his office. The room was large and had minimal furniture. In the center stood a desk and a large leather chair, which was facing a window that showed the rest of the city. Compared to Hyperion, all of the other buildings looked like ants.
"You must be Rhys. Rhys Jackson?" The chair swiveled around to face Rhys, revealing Jack's grinning face. He had two different colored eyes, and light brown hair.
"Uh, yes. That's me." Rhys avoided eye contact, just as Vaughn advised.
"Please, have a seat." Jack motioned to a chair in front of his desk. Rhys nodded and sat down, gulping nervously. "So I hear you want to be my new assistant eh? Thats pretty ballsy." Jack paused, waiting for Rhys' reaction. "What makes you think you'd qualify?"
"W-Well I uh.." Rhys cleared his throat. "I'd like to believe I'm great at following orders and listening so there's that. Also I'm a major people person."
"Uh huh." Jack stood up, folding his arms behind his back. "So, you you're good with people? That's good, I definitely need that in an assistant." His eyes trailed to Rhys, attempting to get eye contact. Rhys kept avoiding it by looking around. His eyes caught Jack's trophy case. The best way to a rich person's heart is to ask about their awards.
"Wow you sure do have a lot of trophies. That's impressive." Rhys said.
"Hm? Oh yes, those old things. Yeah they do remind how great I am, don't they? I would tell you how I got every single trophy but unfortunately we'll have to reschedule that for another time. This is about you Rhysie." Jack smiled, sitting back in his chair.
"Why won't you look me in the eyes Rhys?" Jack asked.
"U-Uh I'm uh... Sorry, that's er, rude of me." Rhys looked at Jack nervously.
"You know what they say, the eyes are the windows to the soul." Jack grinned. "And apparently we seem to have similar windows. Your eyes look just like mine. Heterochromia eh?"
"What? Oh, yeah. I guess we do have similar eyes don't we. Weird huh." Rhys replied.
"Mhmm. Listen Rhysie, how badly do you need this job? I wanna know."
"Well if I'm being completely honest I seriously need this job. Like, a hell of a lot."
"You'd be willing to do anything for this job?" Jack asked, curiously.
"Anything."
Jack stared at Rhys for a couple of moments before getting up again and walking over to Rhys. "Alright that settles it." He grinned, patting Rhys on the back.
"S-Settles what?"
"You'll be my new assistant. I expect you to be here tomorrow at 8 o'clock sharp. Not a minute late, got it?"
"Yessir! Thank you for this, you won't regret it." Rhys grinned.
"Oh I won't." Jack said, leading Rhys to the door. "I'll see you tomorrow Rhysie."
"Yes sir." Rhys left his office, finding Vaughn outside the waiting room.
"So, how'd it go?" Vaughn asked.
"It went well, not like I'm surprised about it though." Rhys smirked. "How about a celebratory lunch?"
"Sounds like a plan, Yvette is gonna wanna join in though, so you might as well invite her."
"Yeah yeah, I will."
