That song is on the radio again she thought as the sky started to turn multicolored; in the close, yet far horizon. "Its incomparable, like your face," giggling proudly about her compliment to the passenger next to her. They were driving to a nearby city to attend a parade, the parade. The one that celebrates love in all forms It was customary with them to visit it every year since they had became close friends.
"And all my thoughts of you They could heat or cool the room And now don't tell me you're fine Oh, honey, you don't have to lie..." Played in her head as it came on in the song, gripping her paper in her hands going over the plan that she hopes is truly attainable as she thought. She had made calculations on every little movement, she would tell her when they got up on the float. As much as it terrifies her she wanted to be as energetic and crazy as her friend. She didn't glorify much in her life, it wasn't her way of things. She was quiet and shy and no one often talked to her unless they had to, and even then they tried not to. She listened to her friend and smiled at her comment. "Wow Lake that was real mature, I don't have a very good face." Unlike you she thought trying not to blush.
"River stop you're being too hard on yourself, your really pretty."
She stopped breathing for a moment to take in what she had just said, surprising her almost. Even though comments like that were made daily but this one was different in a way, not poking fun but not yet flirting in the obvious way she does with the guys she likes.
They sat in awkward silence for a few more minutes as the scenery flew past, with occasionally bumps here and there. Twilight crept closer and closer as River started to worry more and more about her plan with how many things could go wrong, the worst being Lake rejecting her in front of that huge crowd. She started to feel sleep creep faster and faster to drag her into the wonderful dreams she hoped to have in the night. The low murmur of spirits starting to play finally pushing her over the edge of the being awake. Her soft calm breaths accompanies her heart and the song as Lake continuing to drive at the steady pace she had been doing the whole drive.
Lake sat there making the gentle turns off the highway and onto a few back roads that was a smooth way to the diner that her and River always ate at in the morning of the parade. She let her hand slowly slide off the steering wheel and onto the other's knee instead, rubbing it helping her sleep soundly. It's on again was all she could think hearing some of their favorite songs repeating over and over. A smile crept onto her face yet again thinking of tomorrow afternoon when it started, everyone would crowd up and cheer having a fun time. It was tradition that they came, everyone knew them. Sighing softly as the lyrics played faintly through the speakers, almost like they were trying to whisper them secrets that no one else have heard before. Pulling off of the main road to a place that was safe she shut off the car and leaned back looking up through the windows at the stars surrounding them. She felt cradled almost by the feeling of being alone in nature with the stars, and most importantly River there with her too. Falling asleep came easy to her with hope of a tomorrow that holds no barriers to the possibilities.
The morning came faster then she wanted, she woke up startled to the sound and jolt of her friend starting the car to go to the diner. Her breath hitched about the thought of her confession less than a few hours away, it terrified her honestly. The car moved fast towards the diner as she prepared mentally again and again.
River sat at breakfast screaming, on the inside of course. She never had eaten breakfast so fast in her life. "Whoa, slow down or else you'll have to stay back during the parade. We all know that you love the food there, especially the oreo dip with the doughnuts." All River heard was the noises from her mouth not realizing her friends words at all. She was to nervous about the plan to care, for once in her life.
Lake watched her friend shovel food in her mouth faster than she did on thanksgiving. She hadn't said a single word all morning, she saw her hand gripping something in her pocket all morning to. This was a time that they talked about the weekend ahead. It was strange but she decided to ignore it for now.
Getting up and paying the bill went like a snap and sooner than she realized they are at the flot they rode every year. Lake was laughing and chatting with glee meeting new friends and joking with the old all the while River was reading what she would say over and over again even practicing in the bathroom mirror.
The plan was when when the flowers and confetti launched from the canons blocking everyone's view for a moment, and only a moment. She would grab her hand running to the top of the float before everything fell but before the second blast she would say the words she's been planning on saying for years. Then hopefully during the second blast of the confetti she would kiss the love of her life. She mumbled to herself laughing, "Even though she's already kissed me before, this will be different."
After changing into their dresses for the theme this year, which was a wedding. The float that their group chose this year was a wedding cake with cardboard cut out of two men and two women, both each next to each other. The dresses that the girls were wearing was a black dress that flared a lot at the end, with flowers that were the colors of the pride flags, the boys wore white tuxedos with the tie being all the pride flag colors to. Something that Lake loved is that the dress looked a little flirty, but not to much. Just like her.
River stood admiring the crowd as they slowly went past. People yelling happy things and encouragement. Others yelling about their sales and their food. Laughter and good times were everywhere to be seen, no frown in sight. She was waving and holding a bouquet of roses that were dyed blue, they had dark blue veins running up each petal. River and Lake were the only two that have the roses, everyone else had a mix of sunflowers and daisies. Everything smelled of sweets and a field, and then she realized it, the cannons went off with the flower and confetti floating into the air.
Running, River grabbed my hand and started running up to the top of the float. My hair going back in the wind as we rushed past everyone, voices blurring with faces as cheering sounded like a mix.
Panting as she stopped suddenly at the top as we saw everything from a new perspective, and everyone else did to. As the glitter and petals fell the town fell into glory, they saw everyone down the block and past some.
Rainbows were everywhere as people were cheering. The smells of down below were almost nonexistent from up here, it smelled clean.
Lake stared out through the crowd, it was stunning to say the least. The sun was starting to get low in the sky as some pinks and purples were starting to appear. She turned to River as she looked a sickly red. Putting her hand gently to her friends face asked whether or not she was ok. It puzzled her as she didn't respond, only stare right back into her eyes as the others were slowly beginning to brim with tears.
"Lake..." she started to speak, "For many years now I've had a crush on you. Like the kind that it hurts to see they walk by, the kind that you can notice the smallest detail on their face, outfit, or perfume. The kind that when you smile or laugh at anything I say I want to melt onto the ground and just stay there with you. So as long have I seen you like this I've wanted to say this. I love you Lake, with all of my heart and until the end of time." As she said that she kissed her, it felt like a spark almost. So much passion was put into it,like the world was ending kind of passion.
She stood there as her best friend kissed her shocked, she felt so blind for once in her life. Guilty almost, so she grabbed her and kissed her back. Both of them dropping their flowers shocked.
Everyone cheered louder in joy as they saw the love come true. Pulling away astonished and blushing.
"I know River, I love you to."
