A sudden, loud shout from across the room woke me. I look off the couch to see that I had slapped the remote onto the hardwood floors. I dragged myself off of the couch, where I had fell asleep last night, and made my way to the bathroom. The sunshine poured in through the into circular window near the shower. The sun was so bright, winter in Colorado was never hot. I took a longer look to notice the snow slowly falling though the sky and the little kids building snow forts and having snowball fights. I looked away from the window and I took a long look at my sled in the mirror. My long, frizzy, black hair stood out in many directions from my some-what ponytail. I picked up a family photo that was framed and brushed my finger over my mother's face. My mom and I had a string relationship, but when her and my three siblings died suddenly, that relationship was broken. My mom always told me that when she died, my bother and sisters would be the only people I had left, but it didn't workout that way because I was left none of them. I've pretty much been on my own since I was twelve, and I just turned eighteen. My aunts and uncles dropped by a few time a week to check and see if I was still alive, but other than that, I didn't have anyone else.
I splashed cold water on my face to awake me from my daydream. Mascara from last night blackened the water droplets on my face. I took a white towel and dried the water, leaving black smudges all over it. I trotted down the hallway that was filled with family pictures, and made my way to my bedroom. I unplugged my phone from the charger and threw myself on my bed. I went through all of my social media and placed my phone back on my night stand. I threw off my tight party dress from last night and slipped into an over sized t-shirt and put on my favorite fuzzy socks. I walked to the kitchen, almost freezing, and I turned on the coffee machine and waited for it to brew. I plugged in my speaker to the television and blue-toothed my iPod to play my music. While the coffee was being made I ran back to my room in search for an outfit to wear for school. After a long search, I picked out a blush, knit sweater, a blue denim jacket, and black jeans. I walked back into the kitchen, snatched my coffee, and rushed back to the bathroom. I layed out all of my supplied to put my face on. I concealed all my imperfections, loaded on mascara, did a thick cat eye, and put on a light pink matte lipstick. I brushed out my hair leaving it fall to my hips. In between the process I did take sips of my coffee. I left the bathroom, ran to my bedroom and unhooked my phone from the charger. I slipped it into my back pocket and closed my room door. I grabbed my keys, my book bag, and headed out the door. The yellow lights flashed as I unlocked my car door. I drove quicker than usual to school because I realized that it was 7:55 and I had to be at school by 8:15. I drove into the parking lot as I was greeted by the usual "Welcome to Bruce Randolph Highschool." This wasn't the best high school in Colorado, but it was good enough to me. I put my car in park, and stepped out into the cold air again. Jonathan greeted me at my car and he walked me into the school.
Jonathan is one of those friends that are just so cool to hang out with. Sure he might be gay and into girly things, but I don't think that really matters. I've known him for seventeen years. We first met in my child day care when I was one and a half years old. He was two at the time and I remember we played with barbies and crap like that. I guess that was the first sign of him being a little bit on the girlier side, but like I said, I really don't mind. At one point I did have a crush on him, but all those feelings went away when he dated his first boyfriend sophomore year, Jax. Turns out Jax really wasn't gay, and he was hooking up with the typical highschool "cool girls", Amanda, Carmela, and the queen bee, Cassandra. Jonathan hasn't dated since, but because of him and Jax breaking up, me and him because closer.
"Did you see the new America's Next Top Model episode?" He had been obsessed with this show since the first episode in time aired. "Well hi to you to," I said with a smirk on my face. He held out his hand insinuating that he wanted to do our handshake that we've been doing since we made it up in fifth grade. "So kiddo, are you going to prom? I heard that Connor Holmes is going with Juliette Volmer," he squeaked in excitement. "Jon you know I'm not really into that whole 'Coliette' crap." Juliette and Connor have been dating for I think two weeks and people already are making up "ship names" for them because they are going to "last forever", but that's what they said about Juliette's other boyfriends. "Okay sorry sister. Don't hate it because you ain't it!" He strutted away. "Hey hey where are you going without a goodbye hug?" He walked back over to me and squeezed me as hard as he could. "Gotta go love! See ya!" He began on his way to first period. I opened my locker and was tapped lightly on the shoulder, "hey Ella," a soft familiar voice said. "Oh, um, hi," I stuttered. It was Sebastian, or as most people call him, Sebas. He has had a crush on me since freshmen year, and he still hasn't given up. He had short blonde hair and the brightest green eyes possible, he was overall cute, but not my type. "I heard there's prom going on sometime soon and I'm pretty sure everyone is getting dates, so I was wonder if you would-" "Hey girl!" My best friend Luisa barged in with her loud-mouthed self as usual. "Oh sorry was I interrupting you guys or something? I should go," she turned around to walk the opposite way. "Wait no, I was just leaving. Talk to you later Ella?" I nodded and he slowly backed away from me and Luisa. "Okay seriously? Atleast let the kid talk!" I slammed my locker door shut. "Well I'm sorry some looser is more important than me!" She rolled her eyes. "Sebas is not a looser, Luisa! He's just different, and different doesn't make you a looser." "If that's what you want to think then so be it. C'mon we're going to be late for Hernandez's class." She dragged me by my arm and leaded me to biology. I took my usual seat and couldn't help but notice this shy but gorgeous figure sitting next to me. "Good morning students, please take your seats," a deep voice emerged from the front of the class. We have a new student, Xavier Groge, Xavier do you want to say a little about yourself?" The skinny, tall boy stood up from his chair, obviously scared. "I'm Xavier, I moved here from Miami, I'm seventeen, gonna be eighteen next week, and yeah." He slowly sat back down and didn't make another sound. "Okay thank you so much for that Mr. Groge. Now class, we are going to be doing something BIG! The science fair is coming up and I want every single one of you to get a ribbon. Now, I will be pairing you up in groups of two." My heart begins to race knowing I might have a chance with being paired up with Xavier. "Franshesca with Damien, Adam with Carla, James with Marco..." He continued on and on. "Charlie with Luisa, and Xavier with Ella." I smiled internally at the thought of me and Xavier working together. "Okay, so what are you guys waiting for?" Everybody got up and walked to their partner. "ELLA! LOOK!" Luisa loudly whispered and pointed to Charlie which was this "extremely gorgeous hottie" according to her. I made my way to the metal tables that had one empty seat. "Hey," I slowly sat down. "Um, hi," Xavier looked down at his shoes. "Uh. So yea. I don't bite you know," I tapped my pencil on the table. "That's nice to know," he cutely smirked. "Did he tell you guys what the project is about?" I looked around the room to see who was working on what. "Nope. I guess this is kind of a meet your partner thing," I smiled kindly. "Yeah. I guess your friend is getting a bit to comfortable with hers," he pointed and chuckled at Luisa and Charlie making out. "I guess so," I laughed. "So Miami huh?" I didn't even know what I was saying. "Yup. Wasn't really my type of thing though. How long have you been in Colorado?" "For as long as I can remember. You?" "Two months. And damn is it cold!" "Hell yeah!" We both laughed. "So are you going to prom?" "I don't know to be honest. This kid, Sebas, asked me to go with him, but I'm not sure I even want to go, let alone with him." "Oh." He looked at me with hope in his eyes. I was hoping I knew where this was going. "Well I'll see you around." The bell rang. "Totally." I packed up my bags and walked out. Luisa chased after me, "Charlie! CHARLIE WALKER!" "Didn't he just break up with Juliette Volmer?" "And? You're point is?" I rolled my eyes at her question. "Don't you think you should wait until you finish the project before jumping on Volmer's jock?" "I mean we are in the process of the project so why wait?" "Whatever Luisa, I got art, see ya!"
I walked down the hall, and then upstairs to only be greeted by the greaser boys. One of them had his arm around Cassandra, who was the meanest highschool girl you'll ever meet. "Hey sweet cakes!" One of them called pulling away from a girl he was making out with. "Oh bite me jackass," I scolded and continued my wait to art. "Hey girlfriend," Jonathan hugged me from behind. "What's wrong?" He looked into my eyes. I blushed at the thought of Xavier. "Is it someone? Is it a boy? It's a boy isn't it! IT IS! Tell me all about him right now!" Jonathan read me like a book. "He just moved here from Miami." I began to smile. "Ooooooo is he super tan and buff like you see those hotties on the beach commercials?" "No. He's very far from that," I looked up into the ceiling. "I still think he is cute though." "Listen babe, if you want to make that relationship work your going to have to put in some effort." "Whoah! Slow down Jonnie. I want to be friends with him first, and see if he's interested." "Screw the friendzone! Get in there baby girl!" "Jon I have to go!" "We'll talk later," he winked and walked away, the bell rang and I walked into the class. I took a seat and continued painting my replica of Starry Night.
I was gifted in painting, drawing, and dance. I've been taking pointe since I was three. When most people look at me they don't see that you of girl that does ballet. My cold blue eyes and dark hair don't make me look so sweet and innocent.
The rest of my periods were stressful and the time came to when I finally got to get home. "Coming home with us?" Jonathan called from his car. "No, I have my car with me because someone didn't text me this morning." "I know I'm sorry I promise I'll text you tomorrow." "Alright talk to you when I get home! Love ya!" "Love you too girl!" I turned on my engine and made my way home. I unlocked my front door and grabbed my phone out of my pocket. I took a very ugly picture of myself and sent it to Jonathan. He replied with a ton of laughing emoticons. I searched the fridge for food realizing I had to go grocery shopping. I grabbed my keys again and went to the nearest Publix. I walked up and down the isles looking for everything I need until I noticed a familiar face. It was Xavier. I saw his tall figure from two isles over, and noticed he was heading in my direction he turned tin to the frozen food isle and stopped in his tracks when he saw me. He smiled and began rolling his cart again. "This is ironic." "Yeah. A bit weird, but I'm okay with it," he said with a smile. "Your parents have you shopping for them or something?" I opened up the glass door reaching for frozen chocolate chip waffles. "I'm pretty sure if I knew them, I would be shopping for them." My heart skipped a beat. "Oh." My face began to turn red in embarrassment. "What about you? Your parents send you our for shopping?" I placed the box in my basket. "I don't think they would've. They can't really talk, 'cause you know, dead people can't talk." He jaw dropped at my words. "Oh and don't say I'm sorry or whatever. I hate it when people say that." "Oh no. I totally understand. I get it a lot and it's quite annoying." "I know right. Like they have nothing to be sorry for."Yeah. Alright well I have to get going." I rolled my cart away. "See you in class tommorow?" "Yeah. Totally." I tuned around and smiled as hard as someone could could possible smile.
