During this day and age, there were many samurai who live all over Japan. Most of these samurai that are either rogue samurai or in a all male samurai league. There is one specific samurai league that brings fear in all of the people who have ever heard of them and they are called the Shinsengumi.
The reason as to why they are so well know is because of the fact that they use a specific medication called the "Water of Life".
The water of life has many properties such as, to heal the sick and wounded or to get rid of any illness, but there is a side effect to it and it is that your life is shortened and you will turn into a demon called a fury or false demon. Whenever a person drinks this medication they will automatically turn into one of these demons and have a major crave for blood either human or demon.
