"Hi class, this is Kelsea Thompson. She's our new student who just moved from Arizona! Say hi to her, everyone!" The warm, old Mrs. Hartwood introduced the timid looking girl cowering behind her.
Jason gave her a quick once-over and snorted. What a weakling. And ugly too! She was wearing hideous overalls, splattered with paint, and chunky glasses.
Her one redeeming quality was her hair. It was tied in a glossy ponytail that cascaded down her back. The vibrant red color contrasted against her pale skin, but it purported a delicate, china-doll image.
He felt a mixture of relief and disgust when the teacher placed her in the empty seat in front of his. He could now study that luscious red hair, but what a pity it was accompanied by such a hideous face.
He grimaced and she squeaked before sliding into her seat, never making eye contact with anyone.
The class resumed as usual for the next ten minutes, until Jason became bored and looked around the room to find something to entertain him.
His solution sat right in front of him. That thick ponytail hypnotized him with its silky sheen. He leaned right in. Just to touch. She wouldn't even notice a tiny tug.
However, he might have underestimated his strength and self control, because when he grabbed ahold of her smooth tresses, he yanked downwards and marvelled at the softness.
Her head jerked backwards until it hit his desk. She glared at him thorugh piercing that were rapidly swelling up with tears, and let out a wail of pain. Everyone's head swiveled towards the two.
The teacher, distracted by all the commotion, had come over to investigate. After figuring out what happened, she was outraged and shocked by her best student's behavior.
"Jason! I don't know what came over you, but you must apologize at once, to this innocent young lady!"
He knew that if he explained, he would have sounded crazy and no one would have believed him. He was 9 already, couldn't he learn to control his hands? Unhappily, he conceded and apologized.
"Sorry," he muttered, clearly not pleased with the situation. Kelsea didn't seem much better either, but she nodded stiffly and turned around. Mrs. Hartwood let her go to the nurse, and when she came back, the class had already resumed to normal.
When a boy leaned over across the aisle to whisper to Kelsea, he also caught Jason's attention. His usually introverted brother Matt was never this forward, especially not to girls. Maybe he had dropped his eraser and couldn't find it? But Matt's intentions were cleared up when Jason heard him say,
"Hi, I'm Matt. Your hair is really pretty. Do you want to be friends?"
She blushed but when she looked up, her brilliant grin made Jason reconsider his original thoughts on her appearance.
Because when she smiled, Kelsea Thompson became the prettiest girl in the room.
"Ok."

All through lunch, Jason stewed in his own anger and confusion. Who was this new girl, who thought she could just come in with her pretty hair and steal his brother?
Speaking of, those two were happily chatting away at the swing sets. Matt had never seemed so happy talking to someone else. It seemed as if those two just click-ed.
What were they talking about? Why did he care? Matt never sat with Jason anyways, so what was the big deal?
Unfortunately for Jason, the plans that were going on at the swing set were targetting his demise. Right before recess ended, everyone lined up to go back inside. On the way to their classroom, before they entered the school, Kelsey "tripped" and shoved Jason into the mud puddle that was coincidentally on their way.
He was wearing his favorite jersey that his dad had given him on his 8th birthday and she ruined it! On purpose!
From that fateful day on, Kelsea Thompson and Jason Griffin became known as the real-life definitions of war and revenge.
