The gunshot rang through Kevin's ears, but he kept running. Running away from his now dead daughter, away from the man who had shot her, the man he still could not believe was alive. And although he was numb, he also felt a sense of relief. It was finally over.
Kevin climbed through the shattered glass, scanning the dusty room for his wife. He found her quickly, noticing she was crouched on the floor in the center of the room. There was a group of what looked to be six around her, clustered together and speaking in low voices.
They all turned to face him, their exhausted yet determined eyes burning into his. Surprisingly, Aleen and Rose weren't amongst them. He'd expected them to be inside.
One of the smaller men made his way over to Kevin, gun raised. "Where is Avi?" Kevin couldn't find his voice. "He ran out about three minutes ago. Where is he? Did you fucking kill him? Answer the goddamn question before I blow your brains out!"
"Travis!" the tallest man yelled, making his way over as well and pushing the man named Travis' gun out of Kevin's face.
"We're not going to hurt you, but you need to communicate with us," the tall man said. "My name is Scott. Do you know this woman?" By now Alyssa had stood up, but one of the women in the group was holding her back. Kevin nodded, looking at Alyssa intently, as if trying to communicate without words that everything would be okay. As soon as Avi got back, it would be okay. "Who is she?"
For the first time Kevin cleared his throat. "My wife."
"Kevin," someone breathed, but it wasn't Alyssa. It was the girl holding her back.
The group all turned to face the small woman, who was now staring wide-eyed at Kevin. Kevin stared at her in confusion, but soon relief washed over him. She knew who he was.
She made her way toward him. "Are you Kevin?" He nodded. She held her small hand out for him to shake. It was the first humane gesture he'd received. "I'm Kirstin."
"Avi told you about us?" Kevin whispered.
She nodded. "Yes. Where is Avi? We heard a gunshot."
Kevin looked at Alyssa, whose eyes were filled with tears. Although she already knew what he was about to say, he knew it would still break her.
"Avi is fine. The gunshot you heard was... it was Avi shooting my daughter."
Alyssa let out an agonized cry, collapsing to the ground. Kevin hurried over to her, helping her back to her feet as she wailed, holding her against his chest.
"She'd been bit. I couldn't do it myself."
"Why would he do that for you?" Scott asked cautiously.
"He's from Avi's old group," Kirstin said before Kevin had to explain. "They were close friends. His name is Kevin, his wife is Alyssa. Avi knows them. Lower your weapons."
The entire of the group obliged except for one.
"Travis," the tall man warned.
"How long ago did Avi know them?" Travis asked coldly.
"What?" Kirstie replied.
"How long ago?"
"About a year, I think."
"Who knows what happened in that year. They may not even be the people they claim they are."
"You can't be serious," another man chimed in. He had almost completely buzzed black hair and seemed the most frail of all of them. "Travis, you saw how Avi reacted when he saw her for the first time. He clearly knew her."
