"Hey sunshine," Mitch smiled at Kirstie, who had come into his cell with a massive smile.
"Hey Mitchie," she giggled back, sitting down across from him. The sun had set a short while ago, and she was in a pair of baggy sweatpants, clearly ready for bed.
He put down the gun he was cleaning, amused by her giddy expression. "Did you just have sex or something? You're glowing."
She rolled her eyes. "I think I worked things out with Avi."
"Worked things out as in... worked things out?" Mitch smiled.
"Mitch."
"Explain then!"
"Well this morning in the cafeteria, he came up to me, apologized for- for the argument we got into a while back. Not like he needed to, but he did anyway. I didn't get a chance to reply though, before Jess pulled him away. But a few hours ago, I went to see him. Told him I wanted to get along again too, because I really do care about him, and then we wound up talking for hours. Just like we used to." She gleamed.
"That's great, Kirst. What'd ya'll talk about?"
She shrugged. "Everything. He went off about sanity a couple times though, which was a little odd."
"Sanity?"
"I mentioned something about worrying I would lose my mind, and he- I don't even know. He just got so weird about it." She shrugged again. "Who knows, but I don't mind. We're talking. I'm just so glad we're talking."
The conversation would have continued if it weren't for Travis, who'd made his way into the cell and given Kirstie a cold look. She smiled goodbye toward Mitch before leaving quietly.
"Why do you have to be like that?" Mitch sighed, kicking his feet up as Travis pulled on a T-shirt and pajama pants.
"Like what?" he snarled.
"Never mind," Mitch mumbled, snatching the handcuff from under his bed.
But Travis grabbed his wrist before he could lock it on.
"Wait. Can I ask you something first?"
Mitch sat up, looking at his boyfriend in confusion. "Sure."
"I need you to be honest with me, Mitch. Please?"
"Yeah, okay." His confusion was only deepening.
"When did you start sleeping with Scott?"
Mitch stared at Travis is complete shock, his mouth popping open but unable to find words to say. Travis stayed placid, looking at Mitch only with tired eyes.
"You're joking."
"Obviously I'm not."
"You can't be serious."
"Answer the damn question, Mitch."
"No."
"What?"
"I'm not answering because you're being absolutely ridiculous."
"So you two flirting for the past few months, that's just me being ridiculous? When I catch you staring at him with a smile, I'm just ridiculous, aren't I? You two staying up together every other night, giggling, oh yeah, that's all me, just being ridiculous again."
"You're blowing this so far out of proportion."
Travis was shaking his head as he climbed into the bunk above Mitch. "I always am in your mind, aren't I? You know what, you're right, Mitch. And god forbid I try to argue."
Hot tears of anger formed in Mitch's eyes, but he kept his mouth shut. He knew if he said anything else it would all just blow up into a massive argument, and he physically and emotionally could not deal with that right now.
So instead Mitch hastily snapped on his handcuff, laying back in bed and silently letting his tears spill.
