"So you know that the, um, Winter Formal is in a few months and...well I was wondering if you wanted to be my date. I know you're not into that stuff but maybe you could make an exception?" Kyla had mentioned to LaMelo, who was at the moment shooting into one of the rusted baskets in his backyard.
The night was dark, glowing a bit with the sparkle of a few thousand stars. Kyla looked up at the sky as she was sitting on the cement, trying not trying to look at her best friend after asking the question that she had already gotten a response for. LaMelo had hated school dances with a passion because most of his friends never go, including Kyla, but now that she wanted to go, he didn't really feel especially excited to engage in the festivities.
"Kyla, I already told you. I don't want to go and I can't go. I have playoffs during that time...you know the one you told me you would wear my away jersey for." he mentioned as he looked at her hoping to spare her feelings. He observed and noticed that she became withdrawn from her surroundings. She wasn't listening mostly because she was trying not to be hurt even though she had made a commitment.
"Yea, yea I'll be there. It's just, you know I thought we could do something differ..." she trailed off in a timid tone. A few moments later Kyla spoke up. "I've gotta get home, have a test in the morning." she said in a fast paced voiced. She was extremely anxious to get out of that backyard and to get away from LaMelo, holding back the curses she would spew if she had opened her mouth.
"Wait, can we talk about this?" Melo asked Kyla as he grabbed her arm to stop her from going any farther.
"No, I'll see you tomorrow. I have to get a good grade on this test or my grade will drop to a C." she explained to the stubborn boy looking right at her. Kyla looked at him, angered by what he had said earlier. She had always supported his goals and dreams but when she wanted him to do something for her, it was an issue.
"I don't want you to go to sleep angry because of me, you know I'm not like that. Let's communicate." he pleaded. Since they were young, LaMelo had never wanted there to be turmoil between Kyla and himself. Onyeka, Eli, Gelo, and Zo had even known that when Kyla was upset,Lamelo would drop anything and everything to make her feel better, whatever the case may be.
"Enjoy your night LaMelo. We'll speak later, I promise." By now Kyla had calmed down to the minimal extent. She walked up to Lamelo and kissed him on the cheek. LaMelo felt surprised seeing that Kyla rarely touched him much less kissed him. She wasn't the touchy, feely type and everyone knew that. Even on the street, if someone bumped into her she would lose it a little.
Kyla made her way out the house and down the street. Minutes later, she had finally made it home to her mother making Spaghetti and her father watching Sanford&Son. She had managed to slip past them without a full conversation, up to her modern but cozy bedroom. In the room, a widescreen tv sat on the middle of her wall, with her bed a few feet directly infront. Her window was divided into three, allowing her to place a large couch under it so that she can read from time to time while occasionally watching the cars pass by.
Laying her things upon her queen sized bed, a call from Melo comes through her iphone 6 plus. She was hesitant to answer because of their "kiss" but she knows he still thinks of her as the little sister he never had.
"Hey..." she tried to sound enthusiastic when answering the call. It was nerve wracking thinking about what was about to come out of his mouth.
"Hey, you made it home safe?" Kyla could hear rumbling in the background, meaning that he was doing something else while speaking to her.
"Yea, I'm good. Just made it home about 2 minutes ago."
"Ok, you still upset at me? You know I hate making you upset. It makes me think you hate me." he awkwardly laughs.
"No, I'm fine, really. You have nothin to fear.
Good dreams, ok?" Kyla says as she fiddled with an old picture on her nightstand, adjacent to her bed."Good dreams." he replies as he hangs up the phone.
She puts the phone on the charger and ponders the idea of changing clothes but realizes she's too tired. She claps the light off, falls into bed, and let's the darkness of sleep take over her.
