I take a moment to size up my opponent. He's big with muscles that stretch his shirt so tight I'm surprised it hasn't ripped off of him. He is about two feet taller than my 5'9" frame. I smile to myself. Perfect, I have the advantage.
My name is Kalessa Valentino and I am the Alphas only daughter and child. In a week I will be 18 and able to take my place as Alpha of the Clear Lake pack.
The pack got its name because of the beautiful lake that lays on the east end of the territory. It is supposedly a sacred place that only high ranking wolfs can go, except me. I've never been because my father wouldn't permit it. He would shake his head and in his Alpha voice command me to stay away from the lake. I could easily disobey, his Alpha voice didn't really work on me but out of respect I would bow my head and murmur a "Yes Alpha."
Many of the pack members are unsure if a mateless girl is fit to lead but at the same time they respect me because of my rank.
I face my opponent with a smirk on my face which just seems to anger him because he lets out a snarl and crouches down ready to pounce.
Closing my eyes I take a deep breath through my nose and focus on my surroundings. Centering myself I can smell the trees surrounding the pack square and the left over rain, and the crowds adrenaline from the excitement of a duel. I can practically taste the salty rage of the mountain of a man that stands before me. I block out the cheers of the onlookers and focus on the scent in front of me.
I was different than my family and pack, when I fight I prefer to do so with my eyes closed. It helps me focus on the task at hand and not get distracted. Although closing my eyes also served as a handicap. I really only did it when I didn't want to really hurt my enemies.
It's hard to explain but ever sense I was little I knew I was different. Stronger and faster than everyone else. With a bigger wolf and calmer temper. My mother used to tell me I was blessed by Luna the Moon Goddess. She would smile and say I had a purpose and a mission in life. I was never sure what exactly she meant, and now that she is dead, killed by a rouge in an attack against Clear Lake three years ago. My father has never been the same sense, the once warm laugh that used to echo around the mansion whenever he found something funny is now just a distant memory. He has become cold and numb to all feelings and people. Even me.
Danger.
My wolf, Alia, warned me.
Taking a step to the left with my eyes closed I felt my opponent slam into the dirt where I was just standing. I smile even bigger when I hear him roar in rage. Sensing his position I lunge at him and sink my now extended claws into his shoulder blades. His howls of pain made me laugh. He really thought he could beat me?
I admit I had provoked the poor man by pointing out that his muscles made him look like a cloud but it's better to know than be ignorant I believe.
Using my feet to pounce off his back and flip in the air I heard a thump as his face hit the dirt. Opening my eye a crack to see how he was doing I almost laughed at the scene before me. His face was mushed into the mud that was made from the rain earlier today, his knees were on the ground and his butt was propped in the air.
I quickly sobered up from my internal attempt to fight off my laughter when I saw his frame start to shake.
Uh oh.
He shifted into a massive brown wolf that had razor sharp teeth and drool hanging in strings from his jowls. The wounds on his shoulders had already healed.
Sighing I looked down at my outfit. It was my favorite leather skinny jeans with a forest green cardigan over a deep grey tank top. My ankle boots would be missed deeply but I didn't have time to strip because in a second I was tackled into the mud with a seriously pissed off wolf two inches from my face. He barked at me, sending spit everywhere including on my face in demand that I submit. But I am a freaking Valentino. I will NOT submit. I felt Alia try to take control and I let her. But not before requesting, "Could you say it not spray it?"
Wishing my clothes a goodbye I allowed Alia control. In a second I had the wolf flying through the air from the force of my shift. I felt the wind blow through my sleek white fur and I shivered in excitement. It has been awhile since I let my wolf out!
I didn't have time to relish in the feeling though because my opponent was coming my way. Fast.
I was getting bored of this fight, he wasn't much of a challenge. So I decided to end it quickly. Keeping my eyes open this time I watched his every move. And I took note of how he moved.
He was breathing too rough. He wasn't low enough to protect his underbelly from a small wolf.
I was bigger than the average wolf because of my pure bloodline but I didn't let that slow me down.
At the very last second I jumped over him, landing on his back again and sinking my teeth into his neck. Not deep enough to kill him but hard enough to subdue him.
He crumbled to the ground and I gave a warning growl telling him to submit.
He just barked and snapped his jaw in my direction trying to get me off of him.
I could smell his fear, he was afraid. But I could also smell his embarrassment. He didn't like being shown up by a 120 pound seventeen year old. Oh well.
Growling one more time and tightening my grip more he whimpered and went limp in submission.
I had won. Like usual. Sending a quick message to Alia I said
Good job girl.
Letting go I backed away but never turned my back to him. I waited till he shifted and someone tossed him a pair of shorts before I shifted as well. Looking over at the scraps that were once my clothes I pouted my lips. How sad.
Someone attempted to hand me some clothes but I waved them away. I'm not ashamed of my body and it's not like no one here has seen a woman naked before.
Nodding at my opponent as he bowed in respect I silently turned and walked back to my home. I could hear the young unmated men's thoughts as they watched me walk away.
If only she was of age!
That ass though..
She is so freakin awesome! I wish I could fight like that!
I sighed when I got to my room and headed to the shower. Turning the water on full heat I stepped inside. The excitement of the fight had warn off  and my adrenaline rush was gone. That feeling of happiness was gone and I was back to feeling almost nothing. Nothing except the sadness that comes with missing him.
My mate.
I had found him when I was thirteen but he was already eighteen. Old enough to be a warrior wolf. On his first mission his group were outnumbered and brought down. No one made it back that day. And for years I refused to believe he was dead. I refused to accept the fact I was alone now. Every night I would cry until I had no more tears to shed. Then the grief turned to anger. I began training harder and longer until I was the best fighter in my pack. I would avenge him. I just had to wait awhile.
And I had.
I had waited a year. Plotting. Planning. And now the time had finally come to make my move.
Stepping out of the shower I whiped the fog off the mirror and looked at myself. My long deep brown hair hung past my butt and my wide hips and too large of breasts made my sigh. I had the body every girl wanted but I hated it. I wish I was thinner and didn't have huge jugs to weigh me down while I fight.
My eyes were two colors, my left being a bright crystal blue and my right being coal black. It looked strange to me but my mother had loved my eyes.
My full lips were turned down in a scowl that I never seemed to realize I was giving. The only thing that marred my creamy skin was a crescent shaped birthmark that wrapped around my bellybutton.
Turning to leave the bathroom I felt a spark of excitement as I thought about my mission.
Getting dressed in black jeans and a oversized black hoodie that belonged to him. It had long lost his scent but it still held memories.
Pulling on a pair of combat boots I turned to my window. About to jump out when I suddenly remembered!
Smacking my hand to my forehead I ran over to my dresser and grabbed a small vial from the top drawer and downed it's contents.
Gagging at the fowl taste I stood a moment waiting for it to take affect. I got it from the black market community. It was meant to mask my scent so no one could track me. Once again I set off to my window and jumped out. As I stood in my yard i thought about the Lake.
Maybe just once. Alia nudged me eastward.
I nodded and without looking back I took off away from the only home I've ever known.
I will avenge you, Kane.
