Reader POV*
I sat on the old bench in front of a small duck pond, tears streaming down my face. My hands sat clasped in my lap as my (h/c)(h/l) hair fell over my face.
My fault, that was all my fault....
(Best friend) had stopped by. I had been hiding in my apartment for a few weeks now, unable to bring myself to see anyone.
"This isn't healthy, (nickname). You need to get out."
"If you came here just to nag at me, you can leave here now. I am perfectly fine here."
"Please, just for a little while. I was going to go out and eat anyways, so join me."
"No thanks. I'm sure you can let yourself out?" I snapped in anger.
S/he looked at me for a long moment. "Let me know when you decide to rejoin the land of the living." And with that, they left, leaving a pit in my stomach that I brushed away.
I sat back down, picking up my forgotten book, but I couldn't focus on it.
There was a loud screech from outside, making me jump up. I ran to the window and screamed, turning to run out the apartment and down the stairs to the almost silent street below.
(Best friend) lay on the concrete side walk, blood seeping from her/his chest as a car continued to screech down the street. I ran and cradled their body in my arms, sobbing, screaming for someone to call 911, for them to open their eyes and live, to hang on like I hadn't been doing.
A sob escaped me. And another.
My hands fell open, catching the tears of my clenched eyes.
Then I heard a soft chirp, felt something soft and warm land in my hands. I opened my eyes and looked down at a small yellow bird with a little hat. I gave it a shaky smile. "H-hi, Gilbird... what are you d-doing here...?"
"I could ask you the same question, va?" I looked up into the crimson eyes that only belong to Gilbert, my other best friend. "Vhy are you crying?" He sat beside me, pulling me into his chest. "That is unavesome, Liebe."
"It s-should have been me..." I mumbled into his shirt, too ashamed to look him in the eye. "I sent her/him away, Gil... it's my fault..."
He gently lifted my chin, concern displayed upon his face. "You know vhat (Best friend) vould tell you now, right? S/he'd tell you to quit being an idiot. None of it vas your fault. You didn't know s/he vould come over, you didn't know a drive-by vould happen. Stop blaming yourself."
I gently pulled away, giving Gilbird a soft pat on the back as Gilbert pushed a strand of hair behind my ear. "Gil, I'm always going to blame myself..."
He stayed silent for too long. "Gil...?"
He gripped my wrist and pulled up the sleeve before I could jerk away. "Liebe... vhy?"
I looked away in shame, mumbling. "I should be dead... I only cause pain where ever I go, no one needs me..."
      "(Nickname), I need you..."
My eyes widened in shock. Arrogant, prideful Gilbert Beilschmidt needs me?!
"Ich liebe dich, (Nickname), ich liebe dich. Bitte, geben Sie sich nicht auf. Ich brauche dich."
He would have continued, had I not stopped him. "English, Gil, please... it's bad enough you're ranting at me, at least do it in a language I understand..."
He sighed, turning me to face him.
And then his lips crashed into mine.
After some shock, I responded quickly, my lips melding to his own.
Then he pulled away, resting his forehead against my own and looking deep into my eyes. "Ich liebe dich. I love you. Bitte, geben Sie sich nicht auf. Please, don't give up. Ich brauche dich. I need you. Understand now?" He asked softly.
Gilbird sat on my lap as I wrapped my arms around him. "I'm sorry... so sorry..."
      "Just don't leave me... va?"
I nodded quickly. "Never. You're too awesome to leave."
He smirked. "Damn right I am. I'm ze avesome Prussia!!"
I laughed. "Of course you are."
     "And you're mein avesome (Nickname)?"
    I nodded. "All yours."
