Stormy Glimmer, sat at her table looking over some applications. It was close to midnight and she couldn't sleep. Her lack of a job, and being fresh out of high school kept her mind in a whirlpool of thoughts. Her friends all had jobs, and job offers along with scholarships. She had nothing, and being from a poor family with little or no money it was a hard time for her.
How was an eighteen year old, all alone in Alabama, supposed to find her way? Her parents had left her home alone after the graduation ceremony, so she is totally alone now. Her mom got a job in Florida, and her dad started driving a truck.
She moved a security guard application to the side.
"What a mess I've got nothing so far." She said aloud.
She moved an application for the local grocery store to the side.
"A small town has very little for me to do, so bagging groceries maybe my only option."
There were other applications, but they where all for big companies looking for collage graduates. She added an application to the local library to the pile. Until she could afford a collage class, work would have to do.
"Well Tabby I guess I'll be working close to home so that's good for you." The cat purred, and Stormy scratched behind his ears.
She pushed another application to the side.
"Not much to do anyway but fill out all of them and see who calls." Buddy, her huskey was asleep at her feet. His fur was soft and gray, and he looked almost like a wolf.
Stormy closed her eyes and watched pirates, Arabian kings, and Knights in armor on big war horses battle on the borders of far away lands. She loved to dream of the past events. She read about all kinds in history class and some in romance novels. Ships sailing on the open seas. Deserts and Plains stretching out before her. Castles and moats surrounded by mist loomed in front of her.
"I wish I could go back in time and travel the world, to see all the historical events for myself maybe even find love." Buddy looked up at the sound of her voice, his tounge rolled out of his mouth with a yawn. His eyes where golden amber in the dull kitchen light.
Tabby raised his head suddenly and Buddy jumped to his feet as a vibration started to shake the table. Soon the walls and floor began to shake, so hard the dishes and pictures fell from the walls and cabinets crashing to the floor. The lights flickered and blinked as car alarms and home security systems went off. The glass in the windows broke and shattered in all directions. The door to the basement fell open with a bang. Stormy knelt under the table as Tabby ran through the house. Buddy started barking at the basement door that now lay on the floor.
The dogs from her small neighborhood all barked at the unexpected quake.
The quake soon lost its momentum and the vibrations slowed to a stop. Buddy dashed to the basement and shot down the stairs barking and growling.
"No Buddy come back! Don't go down there!" Stormy dashed after Buddy, she stopped on the second step as the darkness of the basement closed in on her. She took a nervous breath. Buddy's bark rang from down below, as she felt for the hand rail. She grabbed hold of the rail and started down the steps.
"Dam it's dark." She said under her breath.
Her mind was racing as she counted the steps down, telling herself, "There is only twelve steps. I can do this it's only twelve steps in the dark." She laughed to herself as her heart started racing. She called out to Buddy, "Buddy where are you? Come here boy. You know I hate the dark!"
The farther she went the colder it got, "ten...eleven...twelve. ok I made it to the bottom. Buddy where are you." She called. A damp chill started to set in as she moved forward.
The floor suddenly shifted as if it was being tossed on a wave. Her first thought was that it was an after shock of the earth quake. She crumpled to the floor covering her head with her arms as she cried out in shock. Finally the sound of creaking wood and wind roaring mixed with waves crashing against hallow oak pulled her from her frightened ball.
Buddy sat looking at her, his tongue hanging out of his jaws in a slow pant. The floor rolled again as another wave hit and thunder split the air. A sharp crash rang over the roar of groans and cracks. Boots hitting the deck above as men ran from one side to another could be heard faintly. The smell of salt water and mold filled her nose. The odor was strong and burned the back of her throat. She could see the outline of barrels and sacks piled high all around her. She looked up at the stairs she had just came down, and through the dim light she could see at the top was a solid hatch like door. An unlit lamp swung on a peg at the top of the stairs.
She was on a ship! Fabric brushed her ankles and she looked down. She wore a dress in an old style ankle long belted waist even a corset.
"Great! Just great!"
The ruffles just under her chin looked dirty and limp. A gold chain hung around her neck burning with a heat of its own. She reached up and found her hair was braided and swept up to the back in a wire swirl making a bun. Her shoes were even the lace up hide boots and they came up past her ankles.
The sound of thunder and a man shouting brought her back to where she was. The latch flew open with a click and the hatch door started to rise. Water poured in and Buddy started growling low in his throat.
"Shit! Buddy sit!" Stormy said as she wrapped her arm around Buddy's thick neck.
