The end of the school day. I am tired. No more time traveling. A day of long blinks and winks. Soon a night of traveling and exhaustion. The bell for home room rings. I walk to class with Jo and Ashtyn. Jo with her long auburn hair and dresses with leather boots and Ashtyn, living up to her name with smoke black hair and dark skin. They are weird but not like me, someone who will time travel by blinking.
“Do you want to go to the diner after school?” Jo turns to ask me. I break from my day dream and reply with a simple “Sure.” That is what I need, a nice peanut butter and chocolate shake for this out of sorts day. I wink left, wink right. I wish I didn’t have this curse, this damn time-traveling curse.
“Adi! Earth to Adi. Are you on this planet?” Ashtyn waves a hand in front of my face. I come back to my head and reality. “You just get lost in that space between your ears don’t you?” She teases. I smile.
“Very funny, Ash.” I reply. We all break out laughing. Lena sees us laughing and pops up near us and walks over.
“What are you laughing about now? You always are laughing in this spot at the same time every day. What’s up?” She gives me the I’m on to you look.
“Everything!” I exclaim. “And Connor alert.” Lena jumps and hides behind Jo. It doesn’t work with Jo’s small frame and Lena’s inhuman height. We walk to home room. Wink, wink. I sit next to Alex and Lena. Blink.
Smoke and ash fill the air. I choke. My eyes are still closed. I will not open them. Sirens screech. I feel around. One step, fall. Ground is mushy and wet. Open eyes. Bodies lie, strewn around the ground. I scream. I look into broken glass. Blood covers my face. I look up.
A building, a sky scraper, is smoking. Fire peeps in the windows. Rain falls from the windows, screaming. People gather, people are pushed. Smoke burns my eyes. Chaos takes over. I run. I stop by a building. The building falls. People are crushed like bugs. People fly to save themselves, drop to Earth. I close my eyes to block the scene.
I open them, no change. A girl cries in the streets. Building about to fall in her street. I sprint. I lift her and run like hell. I look back. Fire roars in the street. People shriek and cry. Blink.
I open my eyes. I feel sick. Vile crawls up my throat. My legs go week. I grab something, some one.
“Adi, are you okay?” I look into the face of Tori. Her blue eyes look worried. I close my eyes, breathe deep. I fall. Vomit escapes my mouth, covering the front sidewalk of the school. “Adi! Someone get water and a towel. Adi, are you okay?”
I feel dizzy. I cup my face in my hands. I give a week cheer; my face is dry and clean. I try and nod. My head gives a horrible pain. I lean on my elbows on my knees, taking deep breaths in. I regain my strength. I stand, my eyes black out for a second. My vision regains. I look down. A teacher is cleaning the puke. Tori helps me into my Mom’s car. I thank her.
Car begins to move. I wave back at Tori. Look forward. Blink.
I hold the girl. She cries. Every breath is a ragged intake. Tears pour out of my eyes. Fear over takes my legs and I stumble to the ground. I catch myself before the girl or I do face plants. I look to the sky; clouds of smoke and ash block the sun. Sirens wail by, fading in the distance. Ash powders our clothes and hair.
A screeching noise breaks through the screams. A loud explosion and collision happens in the air. The tail of a plane enters a sky scraper. I shut my eyes. More debris falls. Blink.
I open my eyes. T ears are acid on my face. My hands shake. I am on the couch at home. I feel like screaming. I want to cry my eyes out.
“Daddy!” I scream. My mom runs into the living room. She puts a hot towel on my forehead. Her auburn hair looks like a mess.
“Where did you go?” My mom asks in a stern tone.
“New York. Eleven years ago. I saw it happen. The planes and the bodies and everything. I saved a girl but I was scared out of my wits.”
“Did you see your dad?” She asks.
“No but I saw his fire truck. I ran away then.” My mom hugged me and made me sleep. No dreams but under my eye lids, blink.
I hope you like this. I am continuing to write this. If you don't, still continue to read it.
