Over the next few days I have helped Mrs. Thomas with several thing such as cleaning, cooking, and helping her with the few children that she has taken in. The three children don't have any names because their parents didn't give them one and Mrs. Thomas says we don't name them. One morning I woke up to find one of the kids missing. Mrs. Thomas didn't tell me that one was leaving so I went to ask her what happened to the child, she dismissed me without answering me.
"I need you to send a letter out for me." She said immediately after I asked, I took the hint that she didn't want to talk about it.
"Alright." I said. She handed me the letter when I noticed that it didn't have her address or her name on it.
"Don't you need to put your name and address on this?" I asked. She looked down at the letter.
"Just write Mrs. Thomas, 26 Piggott's road." With that she walked away. I sent the letter out for her and got back to cleaning. This place was so gross. It was full of clutter and smelled just as disgusting as Mrs. Thomas. I have noticed that Mrs. Thomas doesn't really pay any attention to the kids, she forgets to feed them or bath them, they end up smelling very bad. I have to be the one to take care of them like I'm their mother.
The next day another child was gone. I assumed that Mrs. Thomas found homes for them and just didn't tell me about it. I was wiping down the table when Mrs. Thomas came in with a women holding a child.
"Riley this is Evelina Marmon and her daughter Doris." She said. Mrs. Marmon nodded hello. "Riley and I will take good care of Doris until I find her a new home." She said addressing Mrs. Marmon.when she says me and her she really means me. She hands me the baby. "Follow me" she said leading Mrs. Marmon down the hall to her office.
I have only been down that hall once. I was looking for Mrs. Thomas, when I went in she wasn't there. I looked around and found a whole bunch of receipts for baby clothes, ads for arranged adoptions. There was a different name on each receipt, none that said Mrs. Thomas, their was Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Harding. Curious as to why, I kept looking around when I noticed a door. I opened a door to be hit hard with the smell of something rotten. I wanted to know what the smell was, I moved some stuff out of the way, when the smell became so over bearing. What I saw next was so disgusting I had to hold back vomit. It was one of the three nameless children dead with white tape around its neck. I moved away from the closet trying to get myself together.
What are you doing in here?" I jumped up to be face to face with Mrs. Thomas. She was holding a black bag in her hands. "I asked what are you doing In here?" I took a step back not answering her. Do I question her about the baby? Should I pretend not to know that she killed a poor innocent child, in the worst way possible, by strangling the life out of it. No, I need to get out of here.
"N-nothing" I stuttered-looking for you." I finished. Her eyed widen when she notices the closet door open. "Get out!" She shouted. I ran out of their so quickly.
Now holding this new child, Doris. Will she too be her next victim? No I will not let that happen. I will keep this child safe even if it means finding a home for her myself.
Its been a week since Doris came here and she's still here. She sleeps in my bed and I never let her out of my site. Mrs. Thomas has been busy dong who knows what. I have seen her leave and come back smelling like decay. No one has come in with a new child, for that I'm thankful. Mrs. Thomas has been in her room all morning, when she came out she looked sick, bags under her eyes, eyes blood shot.
"Mrs. Thomas are you alright?" I asked holding Doris in my arm, she has been screaming for the last several minutes and I cant seem to get her to stop.
