Prologue

It's been two weeks...

Two weeks since the disappearance of Phoenix Loretta Holbrook.

Rumors said she ran away from here. That she finally found somewhere better to be than good ol' Sycamore Pointe.

But I knew better...

Phoenix may have been impossible to please, but she loved this small town. It made her feel like a queen. Our high school does not have the stereotypical "Most Popular Girl in School," but she was very popular.  I doubt she would have given that up.

Some people thought that Phoenix was the "sweetest girl." But people like me knew better...

Phoenix walks through the campus with her two best friends as her side, Chelsea and Olivia. I don't know Chelsea all that well, but I've known Olivia since third grade. She's my best mate's twin sister. Olivia is a very sensitive girl. I remember the time she cried in Chemistry because she found the goldfish she had for our lab on its belly. (Don't get me wrong, I hate using animals for projects too.) Phoenix told Olivia that everything would be okay and that Nemo was swimming in Fish Heaven.

However, Olivia told me that Phoenix told her to not be such a baby after school.

Phoenix Holbrook had two faces. The beautiful angel that everyone would see in the hallways, and the devious devil she was behind your back.

I rode my skateboard down the street to the Pizza Hut downtown. I noticed that every post I past had the same poster taped or stapled somewhere on it.

"If you ask me, I'm glad she's gone." Harry said before taking another bite out of his pepperoni slice.

"Mate..."

"What?" He shrugged. "She practically treated Olivia like dirt. At least this way she's finally free from that bitch."

"It doesn't bother you, that she was last seen during your party?" I asked.

"No," he scoffed. "I gave my statement. I always stay the hell away from her. She's someone else's problem."

"I can't imagine what her family's been dealing with..." I shook my head.

"They're probably celebrating right now." Harry chuckled.

"Harry," I warned.

"What?" He chuckled.

"Aren't you the least bit curious as to what happened to her?"

"It's been two weeks, Zayn. She's most likely dead."  My eyes widened and he gave me a look. "Don't tell me you still had a crush on her."

"Why are you talking about her the past tense?" I questioned.

"Look...all I'm saying is...we're all probably better off without her...that girl kept way too many secrets...they're probably the reason why she disappeared."

He wasn't all wrong. Phoenix did keep a lot of secrets. I should know. Phoenix Holbrook didn't give a crap about me...until the day I caught her...

I could not believe what I just saw...

I quickly walked down the driveway and straight back to my car.

"Hey!" Phoenix called out. I ignored her and struggled to find the right key. It was kind of hard while holding a glass tray of lasagna in one hand. "Zayn wait!" She called out before standing in front of me. I glanced at her before scoffing and finding the right key.

"Get away from me." I inserted the key in.

"Zayn you can't tell anyone. Do you here me?" I opened the car and turned to give her an 'are you kidding me?' face. "What you saw tonight...never happened."

"I'm at a loss for words...right now Phoenix."

"It's not what you think." She shook her head as tears ran down her face.

"You know I used to have the biggest crush on you." I shared. Phoenix closed her mouth. "Which sucked because I thought I knew what kind of a bitch you were but this...this is crossing the line." I shook my head.

"You have a crush on me?" She asked innocently.

"Had." I corrected. "And don't act like you didn't know either..." I said as I went inside my car.

"You can't tell her!" She pulled on the door.

"You can't stop me." I said before shutting the door. I placed the lasagna on the passenger's seat and started the car. Phoenix looked like she was trying to come up with something and suddenly her face lit up. She placed her hands on my windows that were halfway up.

"I'll tell everyone about you and Ms. Griffin." She spat. My head whipped towards her and she crossed her arms. "That's right. I know, Zayn."

"How could you-"

"All that matters is...you won't tell my secret...and I won't tell yours."
