The snow cascaded lightly down from the gray clouds that took over the sky, preventing the sun from shining through. It had been pouring down from the sky for only two hours, and the ground was covered in a sheet that had yet to be disturbed.
Thirteen year old Fujioka Kuu stood quietly under the roof of her school building, with a very bored looking, fourteen year old, Hitachiin Hikaru. Luckily for Kuu, he didn't bring Kaoru with him. Kuu had stood there for a good few minutes, blushing, swallowing lumps that clogged her throat, and poking her index fingers together.
Hikaru knew what this meant, and his fourteen year old mind thought it was, for a loss of a better word, stupid. Oh, great, another confession. He would grimace in thought as earlier that day he had gotten her note to meet her outside during study hall.
Now, he stood in front of her, just looking at her with her head down. He had already known what his answer was going to be, "No." He didn't have time for girls, nor did he ever want time for girls, and as many times as he's rejected them, you'd think they'd get the hint.
Unfortunately for poor Kuu, she was bad at receiving messages like that. So with hopeful, and doubtful thoughts in her mind, she finally swallowed another lump that had managed to clog her throat again, yet somehow this one was harder. Like her body was trying to protect her from the rejection coming soon.
She slowly looked up and meets his face, she stumbles her words together into something that sound like, "I-he-er-um," and she shut up again. Kuu had never realized how intimidating his persona was. Anyhow, if she was going to get this done she would have to build up some confidence.
Kuu stared at Hikaru, taking in all the reasons her heart fluttered when she saw him. She clenched her fists into the sleeves of her shirt and held her hands close to her heart, "Hikaru," She started confidently, and he sighed in relief. Now that she had started, he could reject her quicker.
"I-I really admire you, a-and, I really... really like you.. a-and, if you ever shared the same f-feelings then maybe..--"
"No," Hikaru cut shortly, bored eyes stared into her broken ones, "Look, I don't even know your name, and you expect me to like you?" Kuu's heart burst for all the wrong reasons and her arms fell to her side.
"I've been in the same classes with you for.. three years." She mumbled, losing all the confidence she had built up. Kuu stares down at her feet again, her eyes burning with the tears of rejection.
"Three years, eh? You must be boring. Maybe that's why I don't remember you. And I can't date a boring girl." He replies, shoving his hands in his pockets. All the extra picks at her self-esteem were just for his amusement now. Maybe if I hurt this one enough, they'll all go away, he thought.
"And besides, how could Hikaru date a girl who doesn't even know which one of us is which. If you really loved Hikaru, you'd know that I wasn't him. I'm Kaoru." Hikaru says, pulling the old twin card that always made the girls stumble. If they really loved him they'd know, and sometimes they'd say that they didn't care which twin it was. That made him the most furious. Now, he wonders what she'll say.
Kuu looks back up at Hikaru and blinks her eyes, trying to see clearly through the watery vision she was receiving. But, immediately she knew that it wasn't Kaoru standing in front of her. Hikaru was just being mean. Her Hikaru that she thought was so nice, and fun, was being so cruel.
"N-No," She says, wiping her thumb against her cheek, "You're Hikaru. I.. I know you are because you have a lower voice then Kaoru. A-And because.. when I look at K-Kaoru, it's not the same as when I look at you." She admits.
Hikaru rolls his eyes and turns to the side, ready to leave, "Yeah, yeah. What do you know? You're just a stupid girl." He spat, then he turns on his heel and walks away, without any remorse for the broken heart he had just left poor Kuu.
Kuu stares with wide eyes at the boy she thought she loved as he walked away. Her eyes watered faster then they did before and in only a few seconds she couldn't see. She closed her eyes tightly as her body become hot. Her tears cascading down her cheeks like a river does and she loses all her strength. Kuu fell to her knees, wrapping her arms around herself and leaning down toward the ground.
I really am a stupid girl, she thought, to think that he could love me? Who was I kidding? The thoughts in her mind only make her cry more, her hot tear droplets fell from her eyes and melted the snow beneath them.
How could she be so stupid?
