"The storm really washed everything up." I say as I look at my boss mr. Stevens. "I've worked here for thirty years and I've never see anything like it." Mr. Stevens says. "I can come by later and clean if you want." I suggest. "Thank you so much Nina I could really use the help. Laguna beach cabana is supposed to be open for the big summer party in less then a week and we're far from ready and this put us behind about a week." He says. "I'll make sure that at least our section of the cabana is ready by then." I say. "We can't miss the party, it's what brings in the most money." He says. "It'll be ready and better then ever." I say with a smile. "Thank you Nina, I have to get going you know how mrs. Stevens gets when I'm not home by dinner." He says with a laugh. "Tell her I say hi." I say. "I will." He says as he grabs his bags and walks off towards the beach. I start walking towards my house which is just above the cabana clubhouse. "Mom, I'm home." I say as I open the door. No one responds. "Mom?" I ask. The lights flicker and I start getting nervous. "Boo." My mom yells as she starts to laugh. "Not funny! This old apartment is scary enough without you popping up out of nowhere." I say. "Oh come on, you used to love it here when we would visit your grandma." She says. She sits down at the couch and pats the seat next to her. "Talk to me. How's work?" She asks. "Good, mr. and mrs. Stevens invited you over tonight for dinner." I say. "I love the Stevens they were so good to me after your grandfather died and after I told them I was pregnant they gave me a job right away." My mom says. "You were my age when they gave you a job right?" I ask. "Yeah, I was around fifteen." She says. "It's weird to think we had the same job." I say. "It's because no one ever wants to be on cleaning duty not then and definitely not now." My mom says. "I actually have to go back down and finish cleaning I just wanted to stop by and tell you that the Stevens wanted you over for dinner." I say. "Cleaning the pool 'cause of the storm?" She asks. "Yeah, we don't have a lot of time left before the party." I say. I walk back downstairs to the pool and I start to clean it. Out of nowhere this light type thing appears in the pool. "It's probably just the light reflecting off some fish." I say to myself as I look up at the full moon. "Or maybe it wasn't." Someone says. "Who's there? Mom?" I ask. "Guess again." The voice says. I look down at the pool and I see a girl swimming. "Who are you?" I ask. "Nicole, what's your name?" She asks. "Nina Marie but everyone just calls me Nina." I say. "That's a cool name." She says. "Thanks. Can I ask something?" I say. "Anything." She says. "Why are you in the pool?" I say with a smile. "Well, the tail makes it kinda hard to get out without any help." She says. I give huff a questioning look and she raises her. "Pretty amazing, huh?" She says. "So you're a..." I say but u can't finish my sentence. "Mermaid." She says. "How did you become one?" I ask. "I was born with it but if I get out of water and dry up then my legs are there." She says. "Do you mind if I swim with you?" I ask curiously. "Sure the waters great." She says. I already had a bathing suit on so I just take off my clothes and jump in. "So how'd you get washed over here?" I ask. "Storm brought me and a bunch of fish hurdling towards the pool." She says. "You can't turn into a mermaid, can you?" I ask. "I don't know, I don't spend a lot of time on land." She says. "Are you going back to the ocean?" I ask. "Probably not, I live with a pod and they're probably long gone." She says. "So it's like your family left you." I say. "Not really pods are different they aren't family. It's hard to explain." She says. "That sounds like it sucks to be separated from them." I say. "Not really you can find a new pod and you're fine but if you don't that's when things get bad. It's like having no interaction with people. It'll make you crazy." She explains. "So your going to find a new one in the ocean?" I ask. "No, I want to be on land. There's other mermaids who live on land and it sounds like a good deal." She says. "That sounds like fun 'cause then you and I could stay friends." I say as I swim. I look up and a weird blue light is coming straight into the pool. It splashes me on it's way down to the bottom of the pool. "Did you see that?" I ask. "How could I've missed it." Nicole says. "Tonight has been way too weird." I say. "I know right, I never thought I'd be meeting a human so up close." She says. "I didn't even believe in mermaids." I say. "Well if you haven't noticed we're very real." She says. "How are you getting out of the pool?" I ask. "Well I was hoping you'd help me with that." She says with laugh. "Of course, you can stay with me until you find a place to go." I say. "Really?!" She says happily. "Of course." I say. I look down and I see that the blue light is fading. When it seems like it about to go out it shoots up and the light spreads through the pool. "I've never seen anything like that before." Nicole says. "Lets get out of here." I say. She nods and I lift myself out of the pool and I pull her out. "Here." I say as I throw her a towel. "Thanks." She dries herself off and I do the same. She wraps the towel around her. "Do you have anything I can wear." She asks very embarrassed. "Yeah, we're about the same size." I say. We go upstairs she gets dressed and we go to sleep. Man, this morning I woke up and everything was so normal.
