June 1891

Maya fingered through the photos; Mama and her, Bessie, Papa, Erma, Louis... The memories flooded through her as if a dam had broken. Misty eyed, she looked through the ship's porthole to see only the vast blue sea. She rested her head against the side and softly cried herself to sleep.

-In the darkness of the night, Maya tiptoed out of her room, carrying but a stuffed carpetbag. She leaned agianst the window and sobbed, only to wipe her tears, and stand up agiain. She walked downstairs to the table and placed an envelope upon it. She stared briefly at it, then gazed upstairs. A horse's neigh is heard outside; she took a final look, then she ran out the door. Within seconds, the horses have sped away, gone in the starry black night.-

"Maya, darling, are you sure you want nothing else to eat?  Eggs, perhaps, or some greens?"

  "No, Arthur," Maya says dryly.

"Well, if you refuse, Sir Hagel is waiting in his quarters." He said the last part disapprovingly, as if they had to share the same quarters jucst because they were married. So maybe it was traditional for married couples to share a room. But Maya had only agreed to marry him. Not to sleep with him. It wasn't hard to resist his his quickly receding hairline, and his ever-protuding belly. So instead, Maya once again turned towards the sea, her only companion.
