By the time Eun chae arrived in Hanyang, it was extremely late and Chunhwa had closed for the night.
She knocked on the door.“Who's there?” a gruff voice demanded.
“Open the door you moron, who else would knock at this hour?” she replied. The door swung open and Eun Chae walked in and slapped the guard across the head. “Chief maid Eun Chae!, why must you abuse me every time you see me, I was only doing my job ” the young guard said. Eun Chae scoffed and smacked him again. “We both know that you knew I was the one knockings, doing your job my foot!”
Chunhwa was a very unpopular gibang in Hanyang, it was only frequented by men with empty pockets and the gisaeng found there were poorly decorated because they never got enough money to sustain themselves.
Eun chae and her daughter were very unfortunate to end up in chunhwa after Eun chae's husband was arrested for treason. He was an official in the palace who became greedy for the throne and plotted to kill the king.
His plot was discovered and he was hung. His wife and two children were made into state slaves. Eun chae's son went into the army while she and her daughter Chae won were sent to a gibang. Since Eun chae was already in her middle age, she became the chief maid while Chae won was made into a state gisaeng.
The owner of Chunhwa was an old friend of Eun chae so once in a while she allowed Eun chae to leave the gibang.
