After finding the coffin, I took it back with me to Uni in Cheshire. Mr. Todd and I decided that it was best not to tell anyone, including Mr. Adams – who was also my teacher – about finding a body inside the coffin.
We told them it was empty, and they didn't question it any further.
You see, everyone had their own lab room and their teacher couldn't interfere with their studies, unless said student asked for help. So I wasn't worried about Mr. Adams finding out anytime soon, but I was glad that I told Mr. Todd, as I surely couldn’t do this alone. He’s a brilliant anthropologist and has been giving me invaluable help with my research. Without him, I would’ve given up long ago.
It’s been a year and a half now since I found it, and I've been observing the body, but nothing new is happening. The body lies there still but it doesn't have a have a scent like most dead body's do. Nothing makes sense. I mean, I know for sure that the body had to have been buried alive because inside the coffin there were many dents, there was also wounds on his hands/knuckles that hadn’t healed which proved that the boy was indeed trying to escape, but failed. All the signs to prove he was dead were there, Cessation of breathing, Cardiac arrest (no pulse), Pallor mortis, which is the paleness that happens in the 15–120 minutes after death, also Algor mortis, which is the reduction in body temperature following death. Not to mention, Rigor mortis, where the limbs of the body become stiff and difficult to move or manipulate. The only thing that was stopping me from thinking he was dead was the fact that his body hasn’t decayed yet.
After one year of going through records and searching books for his identity, I still found nothing. And, every time I thought I found the slightest hint or clue to prove what was happening to the body scientifically, I ended up back at square one. Like I said, nothing was making sense. Soon enough I gave up and started studying mythology.
It was currently Sunday morning and I decided I should go to the lab to continue research. I regretfully tossed the duvet to the side and stood up, shivering when my feet touched the cold wooden floor. I ignored the feeling and proceeded to grab a towel out the closet and headed toward the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror, and god, I was a mess. My long russet brown hair that was once luxuriant, now looked disheveled and unhealthy, my blue eyes that were once full of life, looked tired and hollow. Ever since I found that body, research has been stressing me out. I haven’t gone out in a while, and every time someone offers I always decline. I sighed and went over to the shower; I fumbled with the knobs until it was the right temperature. I took my clothes off and stepped in, letting the refreshing, warm, droplets of water pour across my body.
After the shower, I quickly threw on a shirt and skinny jeans, I struggled to put them on because my skin was still moist, but once I got them on, I quickly dried my hair and put it in a messy bun. I grabbed my car keys of the dresser and made my way out the door.
On my way to Uni, I grabbed some breakfast from McDonalds, it’s become a routine now and if it wasn’t for my fast metabolism I would probably look like an oompa loompa.
Once I arrived, I made my way toward the science department in the east wing. I knew nobody came to school on Sundays, unless you had work to do on labs or something, but I went checking the class anyway. As predicted, there was nobody in the classroom except for Mr. Todd. I felt the sides of my lips twitch into a grin and went inside to say ‘hi’. I don’t usually get along with my teachers for some reason, but Mr. Todd is different. I guess it’s because he’s the youngest teacher in Uni, not only that but he is very handsome, and not to mention fit. He has every girl head over heels for him. His hair is always looking suave in a pushed back style, his defined jawline with its smattering of stubble, and glistering blue eyes gave his appearance a bit of a bad boy edge; which makes both older and younger women go crazy. I was glad that Him and i were close.
"Hey Mr. Todd," I said trying to get his attention. Clearly startled, his head snapped up from the papers on his desk, before his eyes finally settled on me and his lips stretched into the heart-stopping grin that so many females loved.
"Hey Kim, what are you doing here this early, shouldn't you be enjoying the weekend?" he asked with a smirk as he swiveled lazily in his large, leather-backed chair.
"Yeah well I had nothing to do today and I wanted to just do some research I guess,” I told him truthfully, ignoring the little bit of embarrassment that came with admitting my lack of social life. “Why aren't you enjoying your weekend Mr. Todd?"
"Well I had some work to do so I came here and decided to get it done. Oh, and Kim, please just call me Nick. It's only 'Mr. Todd' during school hours," he said with a smile plastered on his face.
After having a small chat, I said goodbye to Nick and he told me he'll be in the class if I needed anything. I nodded my head in response and started heading toward my lab. I took a quick glance at the body inside the coffin and it still looked the same, nothing different.
For the first time I decided that maybe I should just start inspecting the body and touch it. I was always scared of touching it since I didn’t know much about anatomy nor physiology. I looked at it intently, noticing the very odd pale pigment. I touched its arm and the glacial temperature sent shivers down my spine. I took a deep breath and got up to put gloves on. Usually Mr. Todd is the one examining bodies, but my curiosity got the best of me as I made my way over to the body. I touched its mouth and opened it slightly, I gasped when I saw that his teeth were somehow still white, and not only that, but his canines looked longer and sharper than normal human canines. I decided to first check out his dental records, I headed over to the Occlusal X-ray – which took a picture of the teeth inside and all the way to the jaw – so I could try and distinguish his identity. I quickly got his mouth prepared for the x-ray and stared at the x-ray screen awaiting the results, I heard a beep as the photos came up and I looked over the pictures . . . that's odd, they looked peculiar almost like . . . fangs?
I opened my laptop and fired it up. With the little evidence I have, I started searching through numerous books and websites. After about 4 hours of nothing, I decided to search all the characteristics of the body 'cool temperature, pale pigment, and non-decayed dead body, fangs'. I knew this would get me nowhere, but it was worth a try.
I was skimming down the results when something that caught my eye, ‘The Supernatural and Beyond’, slightly curious, I clicked the link and kept reading. I felt kind of stupid reading this, I mean I’m doing a science degree, I shouldn’t be paying any attention to this supernatural folklore stuff, it’s all fake. But I needed answers and was still curious so, I continued reading. Unconsciously my lips twitched up to a grin as I felt relief that I was sane and proof that what I saw wasn't a hallucination. I read down the lists on supernatural beings and descriptions. . . 'Werewolves, Hybrids, Witches, Vampires'. My relief and grin was long gone after I found a match to what the boy was.
-----A/N: please read---
well, this is my first story on here, I have the story line and a couple chapters written but I don't want to post if no one is going to read, so please please vote and comment if you want me to continue. It would mean a lot (:
