Chapter 1

Sirens blared around me as my feet collided with the ground. The feeling to hide was strong but I pushed the feeling down and continued to run. Stopping now meant being caught and sent back to my home, a home that wasn't as safe as everyone assumed it was. The field was coming closer in sight and that was my safety if I could just get to it. The second I was passed the first row of corn I shifted into my wolf, running for another ten minutes after I was out of the corn field I paused to shift back and take in my surroundings. It was different than I was use to, our pack land mostly consisted of forest and some field that we used for farming but the new open land it was difficult being in such an open space. The sirens had become faint noise now and I hoped I was far enough from my pack that they gave up on looking for me. My inner wolf whimpered and I realized in the midst of running I had brushed up against something sharp cutting up my side. I took a deep breath trying to calm her, she was on high alert and with good reason but I would hopefully heal soon. I was exhausted but I couldn't stop now.

The sound of running water caught both our ears and she pushed me to go to it to clean our wounds. Walking towards the sound I was pleased to find a small waterfall with a clear lake at the bottom. Untying the the shorts and shirt from my thigh I set them on a rock before stepping into the shallow water. Immediately my body welcomed the cold water as it numbed my body. Submerging everything from the neck down I sighed at the relief I felt. Looking up at the horizon the sun was just starting to set the sky in an array of pink, yellow and orange. After making sure my body was numb enough to get out and dry off before the sun completely went down I took shelter under a large willow tree using the waterfall of green to hide behind. I threw on the shirt and shorts to keep myself warmer. I wasn't prepared to run today but today was my best chance at getting out of that house.

Looking down at myself I could see all the bruises of the last beating I had gotten the night before. They were more yellow than purple now but they still made my body sore beyond belief. I was slow to heal now since my aunt and uncle kept me weak by barely feeding me and keeping me busy cleaning and cooking for them. My uncle would beat me if I didn't clean or cook something right, last night's beating was because I forgot to make a dessert to go with dinner only because I didn't have enough time after cleaning the house from their party the night before. My parents were killed a little over a year and a half ago now in a car accident and I had been sent to my aunt and uncle's not long after that. They were the betas of the pack south of the one my parents and I had been a part of. My body started to shake as hunger set in, the sun was almost past the horizon now and it was also getting colder. My eyes drooped and began getting heavy as I tried forcing them to stay open.

My eyes shot open at the sound of paws colliding with the ground too close to comfort as they were coming closer to me. It was pitch black and my eyes struggled to adjust as I was so exhausted. Involuntarily I started to whimper thinking, this is it they had found me and were going to kill me, but the sound of paws stopped right in front of the green wall made from the willow tree. But I couldn't stop my whimpers as the tears started to pour down my face. I was dead.

"Hello?"

My ears perked at hearing the unfamiliar deep baritone voice. The green wall started to part and a figure started to walk towards me.

"Please don't hurt me, please don't hurt me."

I mumbled as the tears kept falling down my face and I pressed myself against the tree trunk as much as I could.

"We aren't here to hurt you I promise; my name is Dairet Knight I'm the alpha of the land you're on. You're safe, Sweetheart."

His voice was calming and safe sounding. My wolf relaxed too at his voice but her guard was back up as he walked closer.
