I soar through the hall clutching my books close to my chest and a shear look of determination on my face. Sweet escape! I feel as though I had just escaped from the evil clutches of joker or maybe even galactus! Summer break, my time to shine and become the hero of my own story. Time to rise through the ashes of my past and.... This is sounding way to dramatic... So yeah summer break is right on the other side of those bleak metal doors in front of me. I push on them with full force only to run smack into someone and fall back on my butt. The person turns and laughs before walking away with the ring of conversation trailing after them.
"Kaia!" A familiar voice stumbles down the hallway towards me. I turn to the gracious voice of my dear friend.
" what took you so long Mandy?" I question her, getting up to my feet.
"I had to clean out my locker" she chirps cheerfully holding open her bag to reveal a stack of drawings. I shake my head and laugh. She shrugs it off and walks out the door with me.
"So your dad is picking us up, right?" She said as hopped over the crack in the cement walk way.
" yeah..." I say scouring the parking lot for an old jeep Sahara. My eyes begin to water from the bright sun beating down against the sleek black parking lot. I throw on some sun glasses and continue to walk down through the row of cars.
I had completely given up hope on my dad after the fifth row of cars and Mandy and I decided to go to our favorite spot on the parking lot, an oak tree with a nice shady area underneath. We stride off towards the area, passing a few acquaintances on the way. But as we pass the edge of the building I catch glimpse of a gang of students, most dressed in black with hair hanging in their face and a couple of them even smoking. I try not to look in their direction and cringe when I hear one of them wolf- whistle at us. I about turn around to go back and beat the ever living tar out of them but Mandy catches my arm and pulls me along.
"Pay no attention to them" she sighs and lets go of my arm.
"Why? Because their a bunch of no brained druggies?" I say with as much emphasis as I can muster. She laughs and nods in agreement.
We make it to our spot and settle down at the base of the big oak. I pull my messenger bag in front of me and begin to dig past all the drawings and comics until I reach my iPod and a pair of ear buds. Tap the screen, put in code, turn on music, thus is the ritual of sitting beneath the oak. Mandy pulls out her sketch book and begins to doodle. I dig through my bag once again and pull out a folder of blank paper. I pull a sheet out and barely touch the lead to the canvas before being so rudely interrupted. Luke jumps out from behind the tree and grabs my shoulders. I flinch and when I do I hit my head against the tree. I rub my head hard and glares Luke behind my shaded glasses.
"Well if it isn't my two favorite ladies!" He smiles and pushes his fedora up on his head.
"Hi Luke, what's up" Mandy says as she lays down her sketch pad. I turn down my music and look up at him.
"Nothing much, just looking for someone to pester" he shrugs.
"So any new girlfriends, or boyfriends, we need to know about." I smirk. He gives me a glare.
"Ha ha so funny Kaia, and no I don't."he sticks his tongue out at me."you can't say anything Kaia! What about that wolf-whistle..." A grin begins to creep across his face. I roll my eyes at him and can't help but grin too.
We stick around for a bit and chat with Luke until my dad shows up. Mandy and I wave goodbye to Luke and climb into the back of the open jeep. My dad turns around and gives us his bright smile.
"So where to first?" He asks turning back around and driving the jeep towards the exit. Mandy and I look at each other a large grin on both of our faces.
" RANDY'S!!!!" We both squeal with delight. He smiles and we head towards town. It had been a tradition on the last day of school every year since Mandy and I first met in kindergarten that my dad would take us the the comic store, Randy's. After the comic store we would get pizza and stay the night at my house and watch scary movies. It's an awesome tradition and I don't plan on ever breaking it.
