At 4:30 AM on Thursday morning, Jake's alarm buzzed softly, pulling him from a deep sleep. He rubbed his eyes, took a moment to gather his thoughts, and then swung his legs over the side of the bed. After a quick shower, he dressed in his crisp work uniform, the fabric feeling fresh against his skin. With a sense of purpose, he made his way to Alexa's room, knowing that saying goodbye was always the hardest part of his day.

As he leaned down to plant a gentle kiss on her forehead, Alexa stirred, her sleepy brown eyes fluttering open. "Daddy, don't go," she said, her voice thick with sleep but laced with genuine concern.

Jake smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I have to, baby. I love you so much. Be good for Grandma and Grandpa while I'm gone," he replied, his heart swelling with affection.

Alexa's lower lip poked out in a tiny pout as she asked, "Can I come see you later, Daddy?"

"Of course, sweetheart," he reassured her, his voice warm and comforting. "I'll talk to Grandma first, okay? We'll figure something out."

"Okay, I love you. Be safe," she said, her arms wrapping around him in a tight embrace, as if trying to hold on to him just a little longer.

Jake hugged her back, feeling the warmth of her small body against him. "I will, baby. Now go to sleep," he whispered, watching as she snuggled back under her blankets, her eyelids growing heavy once more.

After ensuring she was settled, Jake quietly made his way downstairs, his heart both heavy and light. The house was still, the only sound the soft creaking of the floorboards beneath his feet. As he prepared for the day ahead, he couldn't help but think about the little moments that made it all worthwhile, looking forward to seeing Alexa later and cherishing the bond they shared.

"Morning, sweetie. Be safe out there," Jake's mom said as he walked into the kitchen, the familiar warmth of home wrapping around him like a cozy blanket.

"I will, Mom. Listen, Alexa wants to come by the firehouse later. Make sure to call ahead of time; I don't know if I'll be on a call or not," he replied, grabbing a piece of toast and slathering it with butter. The smell of fresh coffee filled the air, mingling with the scent of eggs sizzling on the stove.

"Okay, Jakey, I will. Love you," she said, leaning in for a quick kiss on his cheek, her eyes sparkling with that maternal concern that always made him feel cared for.

"I love you too, Mom," Jake said, his heart swelling with affection as he headed out to his truck. The snow from the night before blanketed the ground, creating a picturesque winter scene, but he knew all too well that it would make the roads treacherous. He had a feeling his morning would be quite busy, and a sense of anticipation stirred within him.

As he drove to the firehouse, he navigated through the slippery streets, keeping his focus sharp. The snowflakes danced in the light of the streetlamps, and he took a moment to appreciate the beauty of the winter morning. However, the thought of the upcoming shift brought him back to reality. He tightened his grip on the steering wheel, ready for whatever the day would throw at him.

Pulling up to the firehouse, Jake grabbed his bag and stepped inside, the familiar sounds of the station welcoming him.

"Wow, the roads are horrible. Better prepare for calls to start coming in," he announced as he walked into the kitchen, where all the guys were gathered, sipping their morning coffee and sharing light banter.

"Yeah, the scanner has been going crazy, but so far it's just been fender benders or cars stuck," Luke, replied, glancing up from his mug with a knowing look. "But it's only a matter of time before we get something serious."
