Gene's POV

"This class takes forever, it always does. Why do I even bother? I'm not going to need to know this in a couple of years. Nobody even cares. I sure don't." I thought.

"Gene! Are you listening?" The history teacher screeched. Everyone hated her. Her voice sounded like nails on a chalkboard.

"No."

"Why aren't you listening? You need to pay attention! You'll need to know this for the sake of the future!"

"Three words. I. Don't. Care." I raised three of my fingers.

"You should care young man!"

"I do care about my education. You just don't teach what I want to learn."

"I'm sure I do."

"Listen up. The reason we go to school is to practice, right?"

"Yes?"

"And practice makes perfect?"

"Of course!"

"Nobody is perfect! Therefore, school is useless, your class is useless. End of story." I said.

At this moment, there was practically steam coming out from her ears. With her bony finger, she pointed to the door.

"OFFICE! Now." She growled.

"Thank god!" I stood up from my seat. I walked over to the door, I turned around and faced the class.

"Have fun guys!" Then I left the room. I pulled out my headphones and listened to the song, Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. I strolled down the hallway, taking my sweet time. Then a flash of light caught my eye. A ceiling light was flickering. That was unusual for how well kept Phoenix Drop High was. I walked beneath the light. I watched it flicker for a while. Something was happening to it. I was no technician, but the light gave me a bad feeling. There was a quiet buzzing sound present as well. I looked closer at the light, then the unthinkable happened. The light came crashing down. It fell next to my feet. The buzzing sound didn't stop. I was startled by the light. Then, all of the lights went out. There was no power in the building at all. At least I thought. The intercom came on. An unfamiliar feminine voice spoke.

"Attention, students! Please go to your 3rd period class immediately! Thank you!"

I don't know why, but I followed her instructions. I ran to third period. I opened the door and went inside. Everyone was in panic. I saw Aphmau leaned against Zane in fear. Zane was hugging her. That made me mad, but I didn't do anything about it. There was a girl in the back of the classroom. She seemed unfamiliar. She wore black combat boots and black torn knee high socks. Her uniform looked very clean. She was chewing pink bubblegum and every so often she would blow a bubble. The teacher entered the room.

"Everyone sit down and stay calm!" He said.

I sat down next to the girl. She seemed cool. Scratch that. She seemed Shadow Knight worthy.

"What's going to happen to us?!" Someone screamed.

"Some of you nothing, some of you will take part in an experiment."

That word didn't make me feel good. What kind of experiment?

"If I read out your name, you will stay here. If I don't, you are free to leave." The teacher pulled out a clipboard.

"Zane Ro'Meave."

I looked at Zane. His eyes/eye was filled with fear and all of the color drained from his face.

"Y/N L/N"

Y/N, she was the girl next to me. She showed no emotion to her name being called.

"Aphmau."

Aphmau showed the same reaction as Zane.

"Gene."

Zane and Aphmau rolled their eyes. I smirked. What experiment is this?

"Laurence Zvhal."

"Garroth Ro'Meave."

"Dante."

"Katelyn."

"Travis Valkrum."

The teacher read out some more names and everyone who didn't get called left the school early.

"So, out of the entire school, there are 20 participants. Please follow me." The teacher lead us out of the school and to the busses.

"Get on and follow all instructions." Then the teacher left us to board the bus.
