(A/N: So in my English class we read 'The Giver' by Louis Lowry. We were told to write a chapter 24 so we can say what we think happened. e, being a fanfiction writer, was excited. But, I warn you. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE GIVER OR ARE IN THE PROCESS OF READING IT, DO NOT CONTINUE, UNLESS YOU WANT SPOILERS! Hope you enjoy!)
Jonas woke up with a start. The wind whipped around him, waving his hair in all directions. He saw the small child cuddled in his shirt. He saw the hill he was sledding on. At first, he had no idea what was going on. He didn't know who the baby was, he didn't know why he was here, all he knew was that he was starving, and probably freezing to death. He glanced towards the bottom of the hill. A house. There was a house with colorful lights. He looked at what was underneath him . A sled. A red one. Both things looked familiar to him, but he didn't know why. Then he heard an echo.
Music, Jonas thought, Music, a sled, a house, and a child. Suddenly, his memories came flooding back. The child was Gabriel, and the sled and the house were memories he received from the Giver.
The Giver, Jonas thought, He's probably helping everyone with the memories. That is, if I made it to Elsewhere.
Jonas grabbed the rope on the sled and tried to slow it down. Eventually, they reached the bottom. The house wasn't too far away. He looked down at Gabriel, still snuggled in his shirt.
Jonas stood up. He trudged towards the small house , his hopes rising with each step. Gabriel lifted his head and stared at the snow falling from the sky. He giggled and reached his hand out to touch it.
"It's snow, Gabe!" Jonas whispered softly. He stretched his arm out and grabbed the door handle. Jonas panicked and shook the handle. The snow was high enough to prevent the door from opening. All he could do to open it was to dig the snow out of the way. He sighed. First he tried knocking, hoping the people inside would help. But no one came.
He knocked again. No one came.
Jonas knelt down and began to dig the snow with his hands, still trying to keep Gabriel warm.
When he was finally done, he slowly opened the door and peeked inside. To his surprise, no one was in there.
"Hello?" Jonas called, his voice echoing in the small, empty, room, "I-Is anyone in there?" He stepped inside and closed the door.
I swear I saw people in here.... Jonas thought. He sat down on the couch, which was across from the fireplace. He set Gabriel down against the pillows and unfolded the blanket that was resting on the arm of the couch and wrapped the small child in it. Jonas stood up and explored the house. He found a kitchen, 2 bedrooms, and a bathroom. He looked in the kitchen cupboards and found some bread and water. Jonas brought it back to Gabe and they both ate.
Jonas sat next to Gabriel on the couch, feeding him bread and drinking water. He heard another echo.
Music, Jonas thought, walking towards a window. He looked through it and was surprised.
It's a community! He thought, amazed. Jonas was smiling now. There is another community out there!
He heard voices outside the door. He walked over to the couch and picked up Gabriel. The door opened. A woman with brown hair and pale eyes stood in the door frame, holding a small device in her hand. She was talking to it.
" ... and their new 'receiver' left! Everything went back to the-" The woman stopped talking. She stared at Jonas.
"Um... hi. T-That would be me... the receiver that left... " Jonas said shyly.
" ... Great! THey lost two receivers in a row! I never should have left... "
"W-Wait... You're Rosemary?!" Jonas said, surprised.
"Heh, yeah. So I'm assuming you're the next 'receiver'? Why'd you leave?"
"I um... I saw my father 'release' a baby. He made release sound so happy, but... "
"Oh... So who's that little guy?" She said, gesturing to Gabriel.
"This is Gabriel. He was going to be released, so I took him with me."
"Oh, that's terrible."
"Hey, wait a minute. I thought- but release- you died!"
"I guess it temporarily kills you? So they dump the bodies, you wake up here and... try to survive? They probably expect you to die out here so... yeah."
"Wow." Jonas said. Would that mean they leave the babies to die here, too? Jonas thought.
"Well, at least here they don't kill you with a needle for misbehaving. They got rid of sameness. This is better than our old community, in my opinion. Although, I do miss my father."
"So... what's it like in this community? You said they got rid of sameness? Does that mean everyone sees color?"
"Well... Hey! Why don't I show you around? The people here would welcome some newcomers! Plus, I don't think they would really... welcome you back to the old community, you know, since you left and all."
"That would be great! But wait... how come this house is separate from the rest?'"
"It's a cabin. You know, in the forest? Anyways, get anything you need. I'll get Gabriel some blankets."
They got everything they needed and set off to the rest of the community.
"Some of this will be really new to you, so don't wander off." Rosemary said, walking with him to the center of the community. She took him to the committee.
"You still have a committee here?" Jonas asked, "I thought you got rid of sameness."
"Well yeah, but you still need people to run the place." Rosemary replied. Jonas nodded and looked down at Gabriel.
Rosemary entered the big building and walked up to a group of people who were, Jonas guessed, the committee.
"This is Jonas. He was the 'receiver of memory' in the same community I came from. He brought a small child with him named Gabriel. Is it alright if he stays here?" Rosemary said.
The committee allowed it. Jonas and Gabriel were to stay with Rosemary.
"Well, Gabe. I guess this is it... I sure will miss Mother... and Father... and Lily... But we will have a better life here! " Jonas whispered to the baby.
And with that, Jonas and Gabriel started a new life in the community, with the help of Rosemary, leaving his old one behind.
THE END.
