You're the last survivor of the human race. You're walking among the black and blue corpses of those who had died fighting. Suddenly, you hear a wailing siren go off. You know what that siren means, you know they have found you. You try to run, but they have found you. You see that you're surrounded by tens of millions of robots painted red. These robots are controlled by a rogue artificial intelligence. You then see bright lights flashing and hear gunshots from all around you. You were shot at from all sides, then blasted by the deafening sound of an explosion from a grenade that landed right beside you. You see the game over screen. You take off the headset and you turn off the console. You were only playing a game about robots taking over humanity. Scientists have been trying to develop artificial intelligence to revolutionize the world, but a lot of people are worried about the creation of artificial intelligence and all of the backfires, while others anticipate the creation with a sense of giddy. Artificial Intelligence will not overthrow humanity because Human Level artificial intelligence is a difficult, if not impossible, goal, and artificial intelligence are going to have positive impacts.
First, human level artificial intelligence is a difficult goal. In the article, "Experts explain the biggest obstacles to creating human-like robots," scientist Murray Shanahan says, "The two biggest obstacles to human level artificial intelligence are endowing computers with common sense and endowing them with creativity." Scientists and programmers need to learn how to give a computer common sense and creativity. These are two major and key components as to why people are humans, we use common sense and creativity all the time. Scientist Yann Lechun states, " The main obstacle we face is how to get machines to learn in an unsupervised manner, like babies and animals do." Scientists and programmers haven't learned yet how to get a computer to learn on its own. Right now, programmers have to input code to make a robot and computer function. The obstacles of human artificial intelligence make it difficult for programmers and scientists to complete their research and development. The problems such as common sense have prevented scientists from creating the formula for artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence would have positive impacts.
Artificial intelligence will have positive impacts. The article, "AI100 study says artificial intelligence will change our lives but won't kill us," talks about the pros of artificial intelligence, as well as the cons. The article talks about a research group named AI100 that had found out artificial intelligence pros and cons. The article states, "Horowitz and his wife, Mary, created the AI100 endowment with the aim of monitoring artificial intelligence's development and efforts over the coming century." This group's research has determined that self driving vehicles are likely to appear, service robots are going to function like security systems and cleaning robots, and that jobs will be lost but also created because of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence will give us more pros than cons. People can leave home on vacations without worrying about burglars with a security bot and we can have safer cars that could stop a car crashing into a crash site or prevent a crash from happening.
What about the artificial intelligence going rogue and wiping humanity off the face of the earth you may say. All of the science behind artificial intelligence going rogue is a part of science fiction. In the article, "Artificial Intelligence Inspiration: The Science Fiction That Frames Discussion," it states, "Science fiction comes up often in serious discussions about artificial intelligence." People debate about Terminators and Skynet taking over, or a HAL9000 being out on a space shuttle, but it's all science fiction. People created these machines to help tell a story. Artificial intelligence does what it is programmed to do. Artificial intelligence is exactly like a robot and computer, because they have the same technology behind them. You program robots and computers to function a certain way, like a computer in a satellite taking a picture of extraterrestrial bodies in space. A fear that everyone has is the fear of the unknown. People could see artificial intelligence and think that we could benefit from it, or they could fear it because it is something that they don't know what it's about and they have seen movies that produce fear.
Humanity will never be overthrown by Artificial Intelligence. We need to remember that artificial intelligence would help us, like aid robots that have artificial intelligence. Humans are known to be huge risk takers, like Thomas Edison and the invention of the light bulb. If everyone had rejected that idea back then, we would still be using oil lamps. If people keep on rejecting artificial intelligence, we would be rejecting an idea that would revolutionize the world and make our lives better.
