Hunting is a very demanding thing, if you breathe too loud you could alert your prey. One wrong step, you crush a leaf and they run. You need complete silence, and that was one thing this Sentinel knows best. He has been in his vantage point -about 30 feet up in a tree- for the better part of an hour. He’s been hunting since before his name was Sentinel.
He takes a deep breath pulls back his bow and lines up the arrow to the deer's heart, as releases his grip he remembers the High Sentinel’s words “In two months when your final power awakens you shall never be able to hunt again!”. He misses his target by a hair, scaring the deer deeper into the wood. In anger Sentinel throws his bow to the ground and let's himself fall after the bow. He closes his eyes and waits he knows that the bow is about 10 seconds ahead of his, so he listens for the soft thud of the bow in the grass and leafs. He waits and waits but still he hears nothing he starts to panic but tells himself to trust in his ability.
Then he hears it, the soft landing of the bow and he can picture the little spikes of grass bend under the weight of the bow. He starts counting one, two, three, four, five, he's five seconds from hitting the ground. He turns inward looking for his shield, Sentinel of the Shield said that he'd find it at his core, he probes his core and finds nothing seven he says to himself he probes deeper in his core he looks more and more frantically and still nothing nine “I'm out of time.” he says aloud not to anyone or thing in particular. Ten, he doesn't even feel the ground, Sentinel of the Shield once said that “In the 0.1 seconds before something harmful comes into contact with a Sentinel their shield will instantly come out and block them from harm.” This Sentinel had taken that as he never needed worry about needing to control it but Sentinel of the Shield that he needed to be able to defend himself if his shield for whatever ever reason didn't deploy. He laughed Sentinel that's never happened it was a ridiculous thought to think that would happen.
Sentinel got up and headed for the dorms after collecting his bow, it was about a 4 mile walk he started thinking his want for the power to fly. He'd see Ma again maybe even Dev his little brother who was about to turn 14 in 3 solar cycles. As he's lost in thought Sentinel fails to hear the thumping of a boar coming at him. The boar charged at home with astonishing speed, Sentinel hears the boar and turns out of instinct he puts hand up in defense and unsurprisingly fire shot out of his hands in the direction of the boar, roasting it alive.
“Damn it!” he thought, he looked around frantically to see if anyone was around. After deeming that no one was around he looked down at his hands in disappointment “Why? Of all the powers why pyrokinesis?” he asked as if his hands were to blame.
“More importantly why didn't you tell me?” asked a voice from one of the trees.
“Maxie? What are you doing here?!” Sentinel asked.
“No, no no you're not blowing past my question. And I told you to call me Max!” Max said with a bit of hurt in her voice.
“I don't know Max, I-I just didn't want to accept it. You know? I mean pyrokinesis! The worst thing for me. Me of all people…..” He trailed off Max could see the hurt in his face.
“Sentinel, no one knows how or why we're gifted our powers. Or even how they'll manifest, but I'd like to think of it as it's a chance to set right the wrongs of the world. And you getting pyrokinesis, in a weird way kind of makes since with this power you can bring the good name back to the pyrokinetic, even after what they did to your Da.” Max said somewhat confidently.
“I just thought you know, I'd always get hydrokinesis.” said Sentinel with lost hope.
“Hey, now! Don't try to steal my power!” Max said with false cheer.
“Come on Maxie let's get back.” Sentinel murmured with sadness.
They walked back in silence Sentinel still staring at his hands as if he'd lost them.Max wondered how to cheer him up, they'd been friends for as long as she could remember. She remembered how they met, it was a slow day at her Da’s bakery so she'd gone into the wood where she saw a little boy trying to pull back the string of a bow but he simply didn't have the strength to do so. She was mesmerized by the sight of the boy. He was maybe about an inch taller than her, his hair was a golden blond it was short around the edges and left long on the top. For one as young as him his build was small but to max his arms were huge, she inched toward him a little and stepped on a twig snapping it. He immediately looked at her and she pressed herself into the tree wishing so much that she could seep into it as to disappear.
“Come out, i already saw you.” he said not trying to hide the annoyance in his voice.
“I-im sorry i didn't mean to mess you up. Honest i was just so mesmerized i've never seen someone like you.” Max said looking intensly at the forest floor.
“Ugh, whatever just go. Leave me in peace.” he said dismissively.
O-okay” Max responded and left the forest.
Once she had gotten back to the bakery her Da questioned her about where she had gone and why she looked sad. She said she'd gone to the forest and that nothing was wrong, her Da left it at that and she headed off to bed. The next day the bakery was just as slow as the day before, so she dismissed herself to the forest. she walked aimlessly or so she thought but when she looked up there he was the same boy from the day before. Although this time she climbed a tree and watched from above if he noticed he said nothing. This went on for weeks her sitting in her tree and him below unaware of him, until one day as she was climbing she lost her balance and fell. Luckily she was close enough to the ground that it wasn't a harmful fall, by the time she got her bearings she barely had time to see the boy fire the arrow at her.
Maxie was so stunned that she didn’t even try to move from the arrow's path. needless to say she was surprised, but what would happen next would change her life forever. Right as the arrow was about to penetrate her thin red shirt a green shield extended from her body and it went about 4 inches from her outstretched arm. Before she had time to question how she did that, max looked for the arrow and she found it shooting back at the boy with even greater speed than when it came at her. But somehow he produced a shield as well but his was not green his was blue and went out farther out than hers.
