I woke up in a dark, empty, cold, blank room. There's a knock on the door. Anyone smart wouldn't have answered the door. Especially if they knew what was in store. I am not anyone smart. I'm someone who knows how to play pretend. Anyone smart wouldn't have been here. In this situation. Right now. Someone who knows how to pretend would.
"Wh-who is it?" I ask shakily. They buy the act. "I'm a doctor from a local hospital," The doctor states, "I'm here to help you. May I come in?" "I suppose," I answer. They open the door. It was a familiar slim, blonde, olive eyed, woman. I wish I never had to see her face again. It took every part of my self-control not to either jump up and scratch her eyes out or vomit at the sight of her.
"Hello, I'm Dr.-" She began. "Dr. Maloney," I cut off. "She looked terrified. "How did y-" She began again. "Your name tag," I answered. Her face relaxed and she began to speak again, "I was wondering if you could take a memory quiz for me. Would that be too hard for you in this state?" She questioned cautiously. "Memory? What's wrong with my memory?" I questioned defensively back. "You were in a horrible car accident and currently have amnesia," She recited from her clipboard. Lies. "Oh. That would explain a lot. Sure," I answered.
"Follow me," She responded, walking out of the room. I followed as she asked and she led me into another blank room. When are they going to do something interesting with these rooms? She gestured towards a plain table and chair. Again. Plain.
I sat down as she handed me a paper and pencil. I looked at the perfect, non-wrinkled paper. Underneath every question was some blank space for writing and a box with 'I don't know' beside it.
1. What is your name? I started to write a random name then I erased it and checked the box. they might get suspicious if I do know.
2. Where do you live? Again I checked the box. Checking the box continued for most of the questions until I reached the last question.
25. What is your specimen number? I paused and looked up pretending to think for a moment. I wrote down 'Specimen A2.' in simple handwriting and stood up.
"Are you done?" Dr. Maloney asked. "Yes, I am," I answered before handing her the quiz. "What am I supposed to do now?" I asked as she looked over the quiz. She only gestured towards the door. I assumed that she wanted me to go back to my room. You know what I did? I went to the front office. I had my experience going there and remembered the directions well. When I made it to the front desk I asked the lady there, Savanna, if I could leave. "As long as the doctor is okay with it then I don't see why not." She said before stamping my hand with the okay sign. Strange... She most likely knew that I was a specimen. She probably has a list somewhere. I walked out of the hospital. Nobody even gave me a second glance as I left. This was too easy but I wasn't complaining. I was just speeding up. Suddenly a hand grabs my wrist. I knew it. This was just too easy. "Where do you think you're going specimen 2A?"
