CHAPTER 3

ONE ON ONE

I was now alone with the Doctor. The “TARDIS” as he called it started to shake as he pushed buttons and lowered levers. I held tight, digging my nails into the seat until it stopped and everything became silent – no more banging on the door.

So many questions were running through my mind, but I didn’t dare speak a word. I couldn’t trust these people. They haven’t given me a reason yet.

The Doctor turned and laid his eyes on me. The intense green was overwhelming and I made myself look away. There was such sadness and knowledge in them, I found it troubling. He walked over to me to take a better look and I felt like I was going through an x-ray.

“I know you’re curious as to who I am and where you are. Why don’t you just ask?”

I looked at him, just as curious as him.

“Because I don’t know if what you will tell me is the truth,” I finally admitted.

“I have no reason to lie to you, AJ. I’ll tell you everything honestly. This is my TARDIS. Stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space,” he said gesturing around us. “It’s a time machine and a spaceship at the same time. Can go practically everywhere,” he explained. “Right now we should be in Rio, I promised Amy.”

I tried to understand what he was telling me, but there was still so much doubt in my mind.

“And me? Well, I’m a Time Lord. From the planet Gallifrey. I’m the last of my kind so I travel the stars. Sometimes, I’ll go to Earth and I’d pick up a companion to come with me. Amelia for example. Rory came later. I’m just and old mad with a box,” he smiled to himself.

“How old?” I questioned since he looked fairly young.

“907 years old,” he said.

I looked at him sceptically.

“I can’t force you to believe me, only you can accept it as the truth or continue to think it impossible,” he sighed. “I sent the others off because I know you don’t want to talk. I can tell you have lived difficulties making you distance and hesitant around people. I thought it might be easier to find out who you are one and one,” he admitted.

There was a long silence that maybe he thought I would speak, but I stayed seated with nothing to say.

“I have nothing against having you here, but I must ask one thing,” he finally spoke.

“What is that?”

“Are you a threat to Amy, Rory and I?”

“No.”

“Fine, then welcome aboard the TARDIS!” he smiled, lightning the mood.

Rory came back, complaining about how it took him forever to find some bandages. He kneeled in front of me to tightly wrap my ankle to prevent me from moving it too much and then gave me a pack of ice to hold against it.

I heard a loud yell from the hall up the flight of stairs.

“Dinner is ready!” Amy yelled from what I imagine is the kitchen.

The Doctor hurried at my side and offered his help. Though I was still doubting about this man, I took his offer. He wrapped an arm around me and helped me up the stairs as Rory followed behind, ready to catch me if I fell.

We walked a little down that hall and entered a room with a long table surrounded my chairs and a small ordinary kitchen with a pizza on the counter.

“Really, Amelia?” the Doctor complained. “And you were such a cook when I first met you…” he sighed with a grin as she cut the pie in equal pieces.

I felt my stomach rumble. I couldn’t remember that last time I had pizza. The last time I ate anything that wasn’t a salad with pieces to chicken.

They each grabbed a plate and a slice and sat at the table. I followed with my own share of the meal, but while they all sat at one end, I kept to myself near the other end.

“So, Ariella, where you from? You don’t sound American for a girl in Florida,” Amy said looking over at me, before take a bit of her pizza.

So I was in Florida? Interesting.

“Colchester,” I answered after a moment.

I thought back of how beautiful I thought that place was when I was a young girl. Oh, how I missed to see the leaves change colour in the autumn and the thin blanket of snow in the winter… I left a pain in my chest as I remembered running after Jared Harris in the school yard, screaming at him to give me back my dolly.

The only thing I didn’t miss was the home. Couple Burt and Janise only ever took in children for the money, they never liked kids at all. Raised by them, I spent years of malnourishment and loneliness. Maybe that’s why I fell for Jared so easily…

“Why are you in America?” Amy continued, pulling me out of my deep thought.

I couldn’t possibly tell these people. I didn’t even want to say it, it was too horrible and personal.

“No reason…” I lied.

“Really? You just decided like that that you wanted to go to America and run down the street in your underwear with men chasing you?” she asked, rolling her eyes.

“Amelia,” the Doctor warned.

“No! Don’t ‘Amelia’ me!” she shouted, standing up. “We have no idea who this girl is and what the Hell she was doing and it sounds fishy to me! I don’t trust her and neither should you! That fact that she’s now just like that travelling with us when we don’t know if she’ll just slice our throats while we sleep is troubling!” she ranted.

She was annoying me. I didn’t trust her just as much as her me, but openly pointing it out and flat out saying she didn’t want me here was a bit hurtful. And I knew pain.

I watched her speak angrily to the Doctor who starred up at her patiently. I could tell Amelia was of the bossy sorts. Maybe even spoiled.

But the Doctor didn’t seem easily intimidated. He stood up as well, quite taller than her, his green eyes looking… not mad, but concerned and determinate.

“Amelia Pond, if you have anything against the presence of Miss Jacob, you could be more polite about it,” he pointed out.

“Screw polite! She just charged into the TARDIS without an invitation! And you call me impolite!”

“I was running for my life!” I blurted out. I felt my cheeks turn red and my heart banging. Now I was sure to be questioned further about it.

They all looked up at me, even Rory who, until now, found his plate quite fascinating.

“I-I…” I started, but couldn’t find the words.

Their eyes all looked so surprised – accept for the Doctor’s. He seemed to already know that. He gazed at me, calm, but concerned. There was a long silence that no one dared to say anything. Even Amy who, until now, wanted to know everything about me.

Finally, the man in the bowtie walked up to me and placed a hand gently on my back.

“You’ve had a rough day, why don’t I show you to your room?” he offered with an assuring smile.

I nodded and shoot up to let him help me out of the room.
