Today was turning out to be one of the worst days of Grace’s life.

It also happened to be her birthday.

Her day didn’t start off badly. Quite the opposite.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, her small groups of friends were throwing her a birthday party later that night, and Grace had just opened her mail to find a letter of acceptance from one of the countries top universities. Grace had always been a bit of a nerd and never had many friends but she had Kathy, who had been her best friend for so long that she was practically Family. Grace’s smile got even bigger when she thought about telling her boyfriend, Nick, about her good news.

Letter in hand she quickly ran through her small two-bedroom apartment, which her and her mother lived in. She was unsurprised to find her at the kitchen table completely absorbed in some document for work.

“I think you’re allowed to take a break on the weekends Mom” Grace said with a laugh.

“You might be right. I’ve been reading the same page for the past ten minutes and I still have no idea what it says.” She pushed the papers away and started to pull back the hair that had escaped her ponytail.

Grace had always wished she could look more like her mother. Her beautiful dark brown hair made her blue eyes stand out, and even with a couple wrinkles she knew that her mother was gorgeous.

“Happy birthday sweetie. My baby girl is all grown up now” her mother trailed off wistfully. “You were born 18 years ago today” her eyes seemed slightly glassy.

Fearing a nostalgia-fueled cry fest, Grace quickly turned her mothers attention to the letter in her hand.

“I got in.”

She had to repeat the news to her mother several times before it sunk in. After reading the letter for herself, her mother pulled Grace in for a hug. “Congratulations honey.” Her mother murmured into her hair. “Your father would have been so proud of you” she said, quieter than before.

“Thanks mom” Grace mumbled back, immediately unconformable.

Grace knew next to nothing about her father, aside from the little that her mother had told her. She knew he had died a long time ago, which is why she had no memory of him. As she grew up, Grace had convinced herself that it was better that way and that it was ridiculous to miss someone that you didn’t know. This made her feel better most of the time, but she could never completely get rid of the ache in her chest when she thought of the parent that she would never have.

Breaking out of the embrace, Grace started to collect her things.

“I’m going to head over to Kathy’s and tell her.” She yelled as she dashed out of the apparent, “Don’t wait up!”

Deciding she would phone Nick later, Grace pulled on her jacket and rushed out into the crisp afternoon. Kathy’s house was only a couple blocks away and Grace was so excited she practically ran there.

As Kathy’s house approached, Grace reached into her pocket to send Kathy a text but found her pocket empty. Cursing her forgetfulness, she knocked on the door. Gracie knew that Kathy was probably in her basement setting up for her birthday party and wouldn’t be able to hear her knocking. Lucky, the door was unlocked so Grace let herself in.

As she walked towards the basement Grace made a mental note to ask Kathy if she could borrow her phone, so she could call Nick.

After opening the basement door she realized that the phone call would be unnecessary, because Nick was already here.
