Chapter One - A New Home

I was running through the dense forest when I heard a roar. I looked up in time to see a jet black dragon hovering above me shoot a ball of purple flames off in another direction. I came to a stop and fell to my knees when I heard the crash.

“Hey, are you OK?” I heard a worried voice and looked up to see the black dragon’s glowing green eyes only inches from my face. I turned my head, facing the direction from which the voice had come.

I was met by a young man with a scrawny build. He had silky brown hair and soothing light green eyes. He had his hand extended towards me.

As I took his hand and began to stand up, I heard the whistle of a Dragon Root arrow heading straight towards the two of us. I heard beating wings and saw jets of fire shooting over us from behind aiming at a nearby bush. I ducked, closing my eyes.

“Woah. That was a little close. Thanks, guys!” the brown haired man called out to the five people who had just come to our rescue. I opened my eyes.

I didn’t know what to think as the others all landed their dragons and dismounted. I heard the whistle of another arrow and jumped into action. I jumped in front of the group and spread my arms and legs.

“Hiccup, who is that and what is she doing?” asked a blonde haired girl with a braid in her hair, turning towards the rider who had saved me. She had a Deadly Nadder standing next to her in a defensive position.

“I don’t know. But look at that tattoo. You don’t think…?” the boy called Hiccup said. I lowered my guard and touched the tattoo on my shoulder.

“Look out! Toothless, Plasma Blast!” Hiccup called, but it was too late. The arrow hit me on the side of my stomach and I crumpled to the ground.

Hiccup ran forward to catch me, but his dragon Toothless got to me first. I landed on my back on Toothless. As I fell back to the ground, my hand reached up to grab the Dragon Root arrow that was lodged in my side. I weakly tugged at it, but it did nothing at all.

“Oh, no. Astrid, come here. Quickly!” Hiccup said the to the blonde girl, who came running over as soon as she heard her name.

“What is it Hic… Oh my Thor! What is that?” Astrid asked, backing away, wide eyed and staring straight at my side.

I gasped for breath as Hiccup picked me up and loaded me onto his dragon.

“Toothless, c’mon, bud. Up!” the black dragon launched off of the ground and spread his broad wings wide.

“Hiccup, are we taking her back to the Edge?” asked a boy with short blonde hair and a chubby figure. He was perched on top of a Gronckle who was flying right next to Toothless.

“Of course we are. C’mon, Fishlegs. Look at her. How is she possibly gonna get anywhere like this?” he said, gesturing to the arrow. I lowered my gaze from the deep blue sky and looked at my side for the first time since I got hit by the arrow. I gasped and quickly closed my eyes, feeling sick. I shifted on my back, raising my hand up towards the arrow. I felt a hand wrap around mine and I opened my eyes slowly. I was met with a pair of soft yet worried green eyes.

“Please, don’t. We’ll work on getting the arrow out when we get back to Dragon’s Edge, ok? So, what’s your name? Why are you out here all alone? Why are Viggo’s men after you? Aren’t you one of them?” he questioned me in a calming tone. He gestured towards the tattoo on my left shoulder.

“Oh, right. I’m (Y/N). I was with Viggo and his hunters, but… I guess they thought I of me as a traitor because I… I saved a dragon after it got caught in one of his traps. He… He told Ryker to get rid of me. So, Ryker dragged me to the edge of their camps and then threw me out of the boundaries. He told me I was a disgrace to all Dragon Hunters…” I began to tear up. I squeezed Hiccup’s hand gently. He looked at me as I raised my eyes to the sky.

“Please, calm down, (Y/N). You don’t have to continue if you don’t want to,” Hiccup spoke calmly as he looked forward again. He smiled, relieved. I turned my head to see what he was looking at. I saw an island with a group of buildings overlooking the sea. I relaxed a little as we landed at the Stables. I was soon surrounded by all of the Dragon Riders, sitting on a stool inside Hiccup’s hut. After I was introduced to the group, Hiccup turned to me.

“So, you said earlier that you freed a dragon from one of Viggo’s traps, right? What type of dragon was it?” Hiccup asked me.

“Oh, yeah. That. It was … It was a…” I cut myself off as I turned towards Toothless.

“(Y/N)? What’s wrong? Are you ok?” Astrid asked me, looking worried.

“Y-yeah, um… I-I’m ok. I-it was an… um. Hiccup, I’m not really sure... how to tell you this. Um… The dragon I saved was…” I stammered nervously, scratching Toothless under his chin.

“C’mon, (Y/N). You’re killing me here. Please. It’s ok. Just tell us.” Hiccup puts his hand on my shoulder.

“Hiccup… ok. It was… a Night Fury, Hiccup. And it wasn’t Toothless. It was female. Adolescent. She looked like she had been on their list for a while now.. She has a whole bunch of scratches everywhere and it looks like she has some really deep gashes on her neck and wings. Oh, no,” I stopped as I realized what Viggo would do if he found the female Night Fury.

“What? What is it?” Fishlegs asked with a hint of nervousness in his voice.

“I promised (D/N) I would go back for her. I promised I would get her to safety,” I said, walking to the edge of the platform Hiccup’s hut was built on. As I looked out at the sea, Hiccup walked up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder again. I turned to look at him with a look of defeat.

“You seem to have already made a bond with her, huh? Don’t worry. We’ll help you find her. Right gang?” Hiccup said, reassuringly. I smiled weakly. I felt myself begin to sway on my feet. I stumbled for a second and then felt myself begin to fall.

“(Y/N)! Oh, no. Fishlegs, come look at this.” Fishlegs’ face became blurred and I began losing consciousness.

“(Y/N), what... what just?” Astrid asked in a worried tone as she hurried over to us.

“I won’t… give up until… until (D/N) is… safe,” I managed before my body shut down and I fell limp in Hiccup’s arms.

“I love her enthusiasm. She’s a lot like Heather and myself.. I like her already,” Astrid’s comment made me smile slightly.

I woke up in a strange room. I looked around and spotted Astrid in the corner of the room. She stood up and walked over as I sat up.

“Good morning, (Y/N). How are you feeling? Are you ok?” I noticed a hint of worry in her voice.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks for checking on me, Astrid. Where’s Hiccup?” she looks me over, worriedly.

“He’s in his hut. Why?” she asked, looking concerned.

“Ok. Hey, can you do me a favor, Astrid?” I asked her, standing up.

“Huh? What kind of favor?” she asked.

“I need to go save (D/N), but---”

“But you don’t want Hiccup to worry about you getting hurt again. I understand. But if you go without telling him, he’s just going to worry even more. You have to tell him, (Y/N),” Astrid interrupted.

“Oh, alright. Fine. Let’s go tell Hiccup,” I replied slowly, earning a small grin of triumph from Astrid.
