Sang jerked up straight in bed with her chest heaving and heart pounding. As she slowly calmed down she realized that the pounding sound was not coming from her heart, but from the front door. She glanced at the clock.

Who would be at the door this early? It's not even 3 am yet.

The pounding never stopped. It even seemed to sound like it was getting louder. Since she lived alone, she got up from the bed and wrapped a robe around herself before heading down the hallway to see who was at the door. She turned on the porch light and whoever was pounding on the door stopped. She peaked through the blinds and gasped.

Standing there on her door step was her older sister Marie. She had not had any contact with Marie since their father had kicked them both out of the house last summer just after Sang had graduated from high school.

Sang quickly unlocked the door and jerked it open. At first they just stared at one another. Marie looked like she had lost too much weight and looked run down. It was far different than the way she had looked when Sang last saw her. Her clothes were hanging off of her tiny, slim build and her face was ghostly pale.

Before Sang or Marie could say a word a cry came from behind Marie. She turned and picked up a ratty looking car seat, which held a small, tiny baby who was sucking on their fist. There was a worn out blue blanket wrapped around the tiny body.

"Oh my. I did not know that you had had a baby," Sang said in a shocked tone. After the words had left her mouth, she felt stupid for say it.

Of course I did not know that she had a baby. She has been gone for over a year.

"Please, Sang, can we come in?"

"Come in, come in," Sang replied as she opened the door wider for them to enter. She closed and locked the door after Marie.

Sang gestured toward the small living room that was off to the left of the entry way and followed behind Marie. When they walked into the room, Marie settled onto the couch. The room only held a small couch, an end table, and a small lamp which sat on the table. The low cast of the light from the lap sent an eerie glow around the room.

Marie looked around with panic clear on her face.

"Marie," she said and waited for Marie to focus on her. " What is wrong? Are you in some kind of trouble? Where have you been this whole time?"

Although their lives growing up had been a little unusual, it had not been bad until Marie's mother had passed away from cancer. Marie had been 15 and she had been 12. After that, their dad had changed. He had not become violent, rather he had just went from a man who had pretended to care about his daughters to acting like they had not even existed. He had kicked them both out after Sang's graduation, stating that they were both old enough to live on their own.

He had treated Marie and her the same while they were growing up. He might have only pretended to care about his kids, but he had loved Sang's mother, at least as much as someone like him could have loved another. He had planned to divorce Marie's mother and marry her mother when tragedy had struck.

When her mother had been 8 months pregnant with her, she had been involved in a hit and run. She had been rushed to the nearest hospital, but by the time her father had reached the hospital, she had already passed away. The doctor had taken her father aside and had told him that with all the damage done to her body there had been no way to save her but they had been able to save the baby.
