"Mommy, I'm hungry!" Stella whines from the backseat.
We've been driving for about thirteen hours already.
"Honey, there's food in the back." My mom says, keeping her eyes to the road.
"I can't reach." She says, trying to reach once more, but failing.
"We need gas again." My dad says, driving faster in order to catch up with Hayden.
My dad rolls down his window as we near their car. Hayden must have seen because he does the same.
"We need gas." My dad yells in order for them to actually be able to hear him.
Hayden looks down at his gas meter and nods. "Us too."
"There's a gas station ahead." Rebecca informs us, looking up from her map.
We drive for a couple more minutes.
As we pull up to the gas station I take note on how empty it is. I guess everyone really is dead.
"Eva, could you get some food for the kids while we get gas?" Mom asks me as she opens her door. "We need to save our supplies for as long as possible."
"Sure." I say, hopping out of the vehicle. I take this opportunity to stretch my cramped legs before I make my way to the front door of the gas station.
"Wait! Take this." My dad says, jogging up to me with a axe.
At first I just stare at it, not exactly knowing what to do. If one of those things came close to me I don't even know if I would be able to kill it. I mean they were people once, right?
I hesitantly reach for the axe. "Hopefully I won't need it." I say to my dad before continuing my walk to the gas station.
Suddenly, I hear footsteps behind me.
Please god, don't let it be one of the dead.
I whip my body around, holding the axe in front of me like a shield.
"It's just me!" Dylan says, holding his hands up in surrender.
I breath a sigh of relief. "Thank god." I say quietly.
I turn back to the door and open it. Inside it's quiet, I don't think anyone's in here. It's hard to see since the power is out and the only light is the sunlight pouring in through the front window.
"This place gives me the creeps." I say, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, let's hurry and get out of here." Dylan says, walking down the first isle and grabbing a couple bags of chips.
"So, where are you guys from?" He asks, glancing up at me.
I walk down the second isle, picking up a green shopping basket that was lying in the middle of the floor.
"Minneapolis." I say as I grab random bags of food, stuffing them in the basket. "How about you guys?" I ask.
"Denver, me and Hayden were in North Dakota for a football game when this all happened." He says with a shrug. "Rebecca's Hayden's sister and came looking for him when she heard what was going on."
"So you guys play football?" I ask as I walk to the back of the room where the drinks are. Man, am I ever thirsty.
"Yeah, we were going to go to college but I guess that's not gunna happen anymore." He says.
"Guess not." I grab six water bottles and a pack of juice boxes, tossing them in the basket that's already almost full.
"Are we good to go?" Dylan asks, walking out from his isle.
