We just picked up Toby, when I laid my eyes on him I knew something was up- other than what I have to tell him. How do I even explain this for peat sake! Do I say," Hey Toby, i'm sorry but our parents died." Uh, no thanks. Roy was driving because i'm well..easy words i'm a mess, my face is really pale from crying and from hearing the news.
" Izzy, what's wrong, your not smiley today." Toby asks me, tears welt up in my eyes ready to spill down my face any second.
"Toby,( I took a deep breath ) Mommy and Daddy were going for breakfast, and their car went BAM! with another." I gestured with my small hands. His eyes watered, I feel so guilty.
" What happened Izzy, is mommy okay? What about daddy?" Tears streamed down my face but I kept a strong face on just for Toby.
" Baby, mommy and daddy are in heaven right now." The car was silent, until Toby let out a huge sob, one after another.
" Can they see us?" I nodded my head.
" They can see us, and hear us baby. They can be standing right next to you right now." I smiled as he smiled and giggled.
" Does daddy have wings?" I laughed. He is just too adorable.
" Yes, daddy has wings. Just like mommy. Make your wings like mommy taught you." Toby started flapping his hands like a bird. He started giggling and so was I.. even in the saddest moments we always mind something to lift up our spirits.
By the time we got home it was around one in the afternoon, Toby was asleep so it was just Roy and I. He parked the car in our driveway, I opened Toby's door and unbuckled him and placed him on my hip as Roy carried my school bag along with his backpack. I went to the couch and laid Toby softly-not wanting to wake him up. I sat next to him and carefully placed his head on my lap and started playing with his soft blond hair. Roy sat next to me.
" Now what? I'm not Eighteen yet, so I can't take care of my brother. What is gonna happen to him Roy? I can't be separated from him- I just can't." One single tear slide down my cheek and landed on Toby's forehead.
" This means i'm an orphan, a-and Toby. Last time was bad enough." Roy wrapped his arm around my shoulder, a comforting gesture.
" Do you have any family? Grandparents? Aunts or Uncles?" I have no family, but Toby does I think. He doesn't have grandparents I know that for sure. Aunt Linda, How could I forget? Aunt Linda is my foster mothers twin sister, she used to come over so often she practically lived here, but when my mom was getting more cooped up on work along with my dad, so she eventually stopped coming. I haven't seen her for almost three years.
" Toby has an Aunt. I'm sure she'll let us stay, but i'm not sure where she is at the moment." Great a step forward and two steps back.
" Do you have your moms phone? Did they give you it?" I nodded.
" But I don't know the password." I looked down at my trembling hands.
" Hand me the phone." I looked up at him, then I hesitated fishing it out of pocket. He started tapping like crazy before smiling.
" Got it." My mouth dropped open. He figured it out and he's not smart like me- that's disappointing on my part. Wait did I just call him dumb? I'm such a bad friend.
" What was it?" I grabbed the phone and starting searching through her contacts.
" 1223." Oh. Well I could have figured it out obviously.
" Oh. Well that was easy- I found it!." I pressed the call button on the screen before putting it on speaker.
"Hi Lizzy how are you?" I heard my cheerful aunt on the line.
" Hi Aunt Linda, it's Isabel." Their was a pause.
" Oh, how are you honey? Are you okay?" I loved my aunt because she looked identical to my foster mother, and their personalities were identical also.
" I'm not okay. I need to tell you something." I started wiping my free hand on my shirt since it was getting sweaty.
" It's about your mother isn't it, I knew something happened." My aunt and mother, had that weird twin telepathy so I wasn't really surprise with what she said.
" Yes.. um Toby's parents were in an accident this morning." I was ready for her to yell or something dramatic.
" Are they okay?" She whispered. I started crying.
" N-no, they- sob- they didn't make it Auntie. I'm so worried what's gonna happen to Toby, i'm not old enough to take care of him! Auntie what do I do?" I started talking really fast, because- that's what I do, I like- don't really know what to say and..calm down.
" Oh my goodness Lizzy. I'm catching a flight, i'll be there as soon as I can. Does Toby know?"
" Yes, he was really sad, but he's taking it pretty well. I don't think he fully understands, but I gave him a childish version of what happened. He started making angel wings for daddy in the car." We both started laughing.
" Okay honey, I gotta go catch my flight, it leaves in less than three hours. Don't worry about picking me up dear okay? Take care of Toby and your man." Man? Roy? I reddened and Roy smirked.
" You mean R-Roy? How do you know about my friend?" She started chuckling.
" Oh your mother can never keep her mouth shut honey, I thought we went over this. But dear, don't lose him he's definitely a keeper." I bet my face was a cherry color- why mom, why do you let me suffer. Roy started laughing as I ended the phone call.
" Stop, your gonna wake up Toby." I kept shushing him as I continued to play with Toby's hair. His hair is softer and silkier than mine! That's crazy, isn't it supposed to be the other way around?
" I'll take him to his room." Roy got up and grabbed Roy and slowly, but carefully went up the stairs to put Toby in his bed. I stared at the family portrait all four of us at DisneyLand in front of the huge castle. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. Now that my parents are gone, I need to be the oldest one for Toby's sake and my own.
I was lost in my thoughts for awhile, I wonder why Roy hasn't came down yet. It's been almost ten minutes, I decided to go check Toby's room. I walked up the stairs quickly and opened Toby's room to see Toby asleep on his bed tucked in, and Roy asleep on the floor, but his position was as if he fell or was pushed.
Don't tell me he had one and I wasn't here. My mind told me it was true, but I didn't believe it.
I grabbed a spare set of blankets and pillows and plopped one underneath Roy's head and the others around his head, then I undid the folded blankets and covered him so he wouldn't wake up cold. I grabbed my red fluffy blanket from my room and headed downstairs to watch some movies as I waited for my Aunt to arrive, it wouldn't be for awhile so might as well get my mind of things.
