The next morning I'm woken up by my mom shaking my shoulders. If I didn't know any better I would think I was still at home and had to get up for school, but I do know better and that is definitely not the case.
"Why are we getting up so early?" I ask her grumpily.
"Gunner said last night that everyone who stays here has to do their part to keep it safe." She sighs. "Now get up, before we get kicked out." She adds.
I think she was just kidding about the getting kicked out part, but I get up anyways. Lifting the thin blanket and sitting up. I walk over to the clothes that my parents brought in last night, changing into the pair of red jean shorts and a plain black t-shirt. I comb my hair with my fingers before putting it up into a ponytail. I pull on a pair of socks and my grey basketball shoes. Seeing as its only the end of September, I don't think I'll be very cold.
I toss yesterday's sweats and t-shirt onto my bed and walk out of the tent.
Stretching, I look around the camp. There's at least thirty men wearing army uniforms walking around, there's children sitting on the ground playing together and all the adults are eating breakfast around the unlit fire pits. Just thinking about food makes my stomach growl. I walk towards the food area, trying to find my family.
"Looking for something?" Rebecca asks from behind me, making me jump.
"Yeah, um have you seen my family?" I turn to look at her with one hand shielding my eyes from the bright sun.
"Last time I saw, your parents were talking to that Gunner guy." She shrugs. They're probably already working. "Why don't you come eat breakfast with us? The kids are there too." Rebecca adds with a friendly smile. I didn't realize how pretty she was before now. She has a small face with somewhat wavy brown hair, her eyelashes are so long and dark it looks like she's wearing makeup, even though she isn't, and her bright green eyes stare at me.
"Sure, I'll be right there." I say and she nods.
I turn around and walk to the table set up and grab my breakfast according to the sign that says;
'children: half a cup of beans, one piece of fish.
Youth: one cup of beans, one piece of fish.
Adults: one and a quarter cup of beans, two pieces of fish.'
I grab my beans and fish and walk over to the others.
"They said we could either go hunting or guard the camp." Hayden is telling the others as I sit down beside Rebecca.
"What are you gunna do?" She asks, turning to me.
Hunting would probably be harder to do, considering that you have to be able to shoot the animal. I don't even know how to shoot a gun. But then again, you also have to be able to shoot the zombie to be able to kill it.
"What are we supposed to do if we don't know how to use a gun?" I ask, eating a spoonful of beans.
"They have lessons." Dylan says.
"How about you guys, what are you going to do?" I ask curiously.
"Guard." Dylan answers.
"Same." Rebecca shrugs.
"I'll probably go hunting." Hayden adds.
"What about us?" Logan finally looks up from his plate to stare at us curiously.
I also turn my head to the others, not knowing the answer to his question. They can't actually be making the kids hunt or guard. I mean seriously, that's like child labour. Or maybe they'll just teach them how to defend themselves, seeing as they will probably need to sooner or later.
