The first time I saw her, it was the second day of school in seventh grade. She was wearing skinny jeans and a Twenty One Pilots hoodie. To others she may have seemed like any average girl trying to blend in. To me, she was someone I wanted to know. I remember our first conversation like it was yesterday when in fact it was four years ago.
"Hi." I say as I sit across from her in the crowded lunchroom that day. "What are you reading?"
"Would you believe me if I said it was The Call of the Wild?", she says as she flashes a smile.
"I might. It's nice to meet someone at this school who likes to read something other than magazines. My names Alana. May I know yours?"
"Ditto, it's Miriam. Do you like movies too?"
This is how our friendship began. We shared books. We shared movies. Laughter, smiles, and even tears. Wherever she was I was there too and vice versa. We were instant best friends and enjoyed each other's company always. Even if we did get mad at each other it would never be for long. We would always have each other's backs.
I haven't seen her all summer. She's been away at a camp for young writers to get tips and advice from some well known authors. Oh how I've missed her. We sent letters back and forth all summer but for me it wasn't enough. This is the first time I have gotten to see her since school got out. Of course the first thing we plan on doing is watching the new movie Split, then it's off to my house to go swimming. I can already feel the excitement at the thought of seeing her. Already, I have my music blasting the new Calvin Harris song. It makes me think of her strangely. "And everybody's watching her, but she's staring at you," the radio songs. I hear a car pull up outside and my heart leaps out of my chest. She's here!
