Chapter 06

Maya came home to find her brother sitting on the couch reading a book; normally she wouldn’t have found it odd but the fact that he was reading it upside down made her slightly concerned.

“Matt?”

He didn’t look up from the book. “Yes?”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine.”

“Then why are you reading a book upside down?”

The boy paused then answered. “I like a challenge.”

Her frown deepening she walked over to the sofa for where her brother lay and took the book from his hands so he would look at her. “What’s going on Matt?”

He smiled at his sister. “Nothing really, I bumped into Laura a little earlier today, she seemed worried. That English teacher of her’s sent her home, because he thought she wasn’t feeling well.”

That explains why Kathy and I didn’t see her in class. She tried calling Laura. “She turned off her phone.”

“Hey Sis I have a question.”

“What is it?” she asked while scrolling through her phone numbers to contact Kathy.

“Do you know anything about Laura’s parents?”

“Her parents?” she said looking slightly confused. “Why would you ask that?”

The boy merely shrugged, saying nothing in return.

A slight feeling of concern crept into Maya’s mind, something in how her little brother was acting felt uncomfortably strange and didn’t know how to place it. Before her parents would take Matt somewhere and he would be his happy energetic self again but now that they weren’t here she wasn’t sure how to go about it.

“I’m alright Maya,” he said suddenly before getting up and heading to the stairs. “You don’t need to worry about me if you have to worry about anyone it should probably be Laura.”

“Why do you say that?” she asked with a slight note of concern.

The boy stopped and looked back his sister. “You should know why, she is your friend after all.”

Something about how her brother put those words made her feel extremely unsettled. When her brother head up to the second floor Maya then grabbed her cell phone once more and dialed Laura again.

This time Laura answered.

“Hey Maya,” Laura said. “What’s up?”

“What’s up?” she repeated. “I’ve been trying to get a hold of you for the past thirty minutes is what’s up! what have you been doing?”

Laura was quite for a moment. “I’m sorry,” she said finally. “I’ve been looking for something right now so I haven’t been able to answer my cell, is something wrong?”
