The day is hot, but the shade beneath the cherry blossom tree is cool. I have a baseball game tonight, but unlike the others, I dread this one. Maybe it's because people from different areas in Japan will be coming to it or maybe it's something more. Pushing the baseball game from my mind, I close my eyes and enjoy the sounds of the woods.
"Hey Bai," Myaomi says while sitting next to me, her long lavender hair practically floating behind her.
"Hey," Ugachi also says while he settles on the other side of me. We sit, watching the petals of the blossoms peacefully floating to the ground.
"I brought pockeys if you want some," Myaomi says, opening a green box. We munch on the green tea flavored biscuit sticks and talk about the rapidly approaching last day of school.
I roll up the white sleeve of my school uniform and check my watch. 3:30. "I'd better go, the game is in a hour," I say while getting up.
"Alright baseball star, get out there," Myaomi says.
"Good luck Bai, we'll be there!" Ugachi calls as I run away.
CRACK!!! I sprint to second base and stop, my chest rising and falling as I attempt to catch my breath. My long black hair must've been a mess from the wind whipping at it. The next batter on our team, Akemi Funabashi, steps up to the plate and hits a double. The catcher isn't fast enough to tag me out, and I slide into home plate for the win.
My team runs over as we jump up and down in victory. I look up at the scoreboard, grinning to see our score, but I soon stop. A man cloaked in red eerily floats above the board. Screams arise as a whirlwind destroys everything. As I gape at the scene, something hits my head. Everything goes white.
Everything is out of focus as I stumble to my feet. It reeks! I think as I look around. Flames lick everything and the stench of charred meat overwhelms my senses. Something black is sprawled next to me, and I lean in to examine it. I look at it and stumble back at the horrific sight. No..... This can't be happening. That can't be a person, I think to myself.
My stomach churns at the scent of burning corpses. I feel vomit rising in my throat until it reaches my tongue. I cover my mouth as the chunky contents of my lunch cover my palm.
I fall onto my hands and heave the rest of my stomach's contents onto the ground. Tears stream from my eyes as I attempt to convince myself that this isn't real. I look up at the sky to see the Red Man floating down towards me.
I try to crawl back and my hands crack through the skull of a corpse. The Red Man continues to follow me as I scramble to escape.
"Get away!" I screech while swatting the air with my arm. I keep crawling backwards until something hot sears my hand.
The smell of my own burning flesh fills my nose and I cry out. The Red Man gets closer as I frantically shake my hand in the air to extinguish the flames. When they finally go out, the Red Man is inches from my face.
"Kishi," he whispers with a sneer. He exposes his palm and something red starts to form. It starts to take the form of a crystal, and before I can react, he forces it into my chest. A blinding white pain shoots throughout my body and I scream in agony. My vision blurs and goes white.
I wake up to the foul stench of the hospital. Groaning, I prop myself onto my elbows. I look around and nearly jump out of my skin. Two large men sit beside my bed.
"Are you Bai Hatoyama?" the larger man asks. I can only squeak and nod. "You'll have to come with us," the other man says.
A nurse helps me out of my bed while the men handcuff me. They lead me down a hallway where a neatly dressed man greets us.
"Hello Bai, I will be your lawyer, Tsunenga Tamaki," says the man, grinning.
"They have to know it wasn't me," is the only thing I can choke out.
"Yes, I know that, and I'll do my best to make sure that's what the judge believes," Mr. Tamaki says while taking my handcuffed hands. "Now come," he coos. "The judge is waiting."
I walk down an empty corridor with my two guards behind me. The only sound that rang in my ears was the jingling of the handcuffs. This isn't right. They have to know it wasn't me, but it was that Red Man, I hopelessly think. We round a corner to come face to face with two large oak doors that lead to the courtroom.
The doors open and I enter the room. A small pedestal for me to stand behind sits in the middle of the room. I step behind it, my hands shaking.
"Will Bai Hatoyama please step forward," the judge announces. I step up to the pedestal. I tremble as the angry families bore holes into the back of my head with their glares. They each hold a picture frame with the face of their deceased child as a memorial of them.
"On Wednesday, October eighth at five o'clock in the afternoon, you were playing in a baseball game?"
"Yes, your honor," I mumble."And you set up a bomb for when the clock hit five?"
"No, your honor,"
"Alright, thank you Bai, you may step down," the judge announces. I take a deep breathe and step down. "Now, will the families of Myaomi Urgataya and Ugachi Sawmura please step forward," the judge says.
The families of my closest friends step up.
"How do you know Bai?" the judge asks.
"She was my son's friend. She was like a sister to him, and a daughter to us. That was before she slaughtered him!" Ugachi's mother says, her voice rising with every word. I want to object, but I have to stay quiet as they fill the judge's ears with lies.
"Our daughter Myaomi met Bai eight years ago when they were eight. She was like a sister to her, and Myaomi supported this...... This monster through everything. We had no idea that she would kill our daughter," Myaomi's father says, angrily glancing at me throughout his spiel.
"May I see the evidence now?" the judge says. One policeman carries a stack of files over to the judge. He examines the files, and my heart rate increases. I look over at Mr. Tamaki, and he flashes me a thumbs up. I smile at the thought that I may make it out of here without any charges.
"After careful examination of this evidence, Bai Hatoyama," the judge says, pausing after my name. "You have been proven......." I take a deep breath, knowing I'm innocent. "Guilty."
I swing around to to face Mr. Tamaki. "You liar! You said I'd be proven innocent, not guilty!" I scream. He shrugs with a smile, and tears well up in my eyes. I want to strangle him. I want to choke that stupid smile off of that ugly face.
After my outburst with my lawyer, I face Ugachi and Myaomi's parents. "You know I'd never hurt them! They were my friends and I loved them!" I screech. Myaomi's parents turn away crying, but Ugachi's parents go into a frenzy.
"Liar! You took our son! If you 'loved' him so much, then why did you kill him? He didn't do anything wrong, and didn't deserve this!" Ugachi's father screams. He then hurls the glass picture frame at my face, and it shatters. Before anything else can happen, four husky guards whisk me away to a white prison van labeled Deadman Wonderland.AN: Hey guys!
