Prologue
General POV
Valkyrie Cain ran as the beast followed her. She ducked a swipe of the beast's arm, then kicked it in the shin. Seeing no effect, she jumped onto the wall beside her and shrieked as the beast punched her. Good God, that thing hit hard. She lay on the ground, barely breathing. She heard a shout. "Valkyrie!" Skulduggery. She turned her head to call for him just as the beast kicked her, and she went spinning into darkness.
Still, it had done its job and endangered Valkyrie's life, releasing the animal within.

Chapter 1. Skulduggery and Valkyrie
Darquesse's POV
I could feel its energy.
It stalked past me, turning quickly to me if I made a sound. I laughed. I looked around, and saw I was tied to a chair, my hands behind me.
"Scared of losing your most precious specimen?" I mocked, clicking my fingers. As flames engulfed my hands, it screamed, a sound of pure fear, and battered them with a jacket. I recognized Skulduggery Pleasant's Daffodil Day pin on it. He had scribbled "SP" on the front, in the middle of the daffodil. I smiled, and summoning my powers together, I brought my hands close to my chest, then flung them out.
Then the room exploded.
Skulduggery's POV
I heard an explosion where they were keeping Valkyrie. I ran down the corridor, glad that they forgot to tie me up. I kicked the door open, then saw Valkyrie with a smile on her face in a total demolished room. My non-existant eyes widened. I ran over, then saw that she wasn't Valkyrie.
"Darquesse. I've been waiting," I said.
She looked me up and down, still with that smile on her face. I didn't like that. I knew she could tear my body apart. I didn't want her turning out like me... Lord Vile.
"Mr. Pleasant," she sauntered over. "My other me, your friend, wishes to say hello."
"Let her out."
"But you don't understand. I am Valkyrie. I'm just embracing my potential."
"Darquesse. It's her time to live, not you."
I could feel her looking at me. She rose. I followed her. She smiled at me with a twinkle in her eye.
"I love watching Valkyrie fall," she laughed.
Then that twinkle was gone, and I knew Valkyrie was back. "Bloody hell!" she shrieked, and fell. I swooped down and caught her.
"Hush now. Darquesse is gone."
She pushed me away. "Shut up, Skulduggery. I'm not a bloody two year old." I sighed and let her down. Valkyrie Cain was a powerful girl. But she was turning out too like me. And I didn't like that. Not one bit.
