"Destiny is a worrying concept.
I don't want to be fated, I want to choose."Winterson, Written on the Body
Topanga Truell had hated everyone, once.Being stuck in a small town in Washington filled with people who never failed to have something to say, or an opinion to give, about the scandals of your family while growing up didn't put the whole idea of human companionship in a good light — not when side-eyes and hushed whispers in the school hallways had become a normal occurrence for Topanga. She met each look of contempt with an icy glare, chin stubbornly set as she flipped them off, and did so unapologetically. Her reputation — and the fact that she had a bit of an attitude problem — was enough to scare off any attempts of friendship with the girl.
That was, until Paul Lahote came along.
The boy who got on her last nerve with how he matched her every sarcastic remark with one of his own, with how he memorized lines from her favorite books just to quote them at her, with his ability to see right through every wall she'd built (no matter how hard she'd tried to hide behind them), and with how he managed to weasel his way into her hardened heart had been the only exception to Topanga's endles list of people she hated. But, again, that was once. After Paul suddenly up and left her life without so much as a glance back or an explanation for his actions, Topanga found herself reverting back to her old ways by keeping everyone at a (very far) distance.
But just when she's finally starting to feel some semblance of normal in life post-Paul, their two worlds collide with no forewarning. Topanga's thrown into a supernatural war the Elders say she plays a key role in as the Keeper of Knowledge — whatever that means — and is given a destiny she never asked for; one that others have made clear they don't want her to have. It doesn't help either that that destiny seems to involve Paul Lahote, whom Topanga hasn't yet forgiven for his shutting her out just months before. But as she discovers more about what it means to be Keeper, a position of one of the highest honors within a pack, Topanga realizes this is her chance to step up and show everyone that she's more than what they say she is.
