Long ago a deal was made between death and the human race. Death would watch the human race and wait till it was time the human moved on to whatever the next journey of that human held. At first this worked great, but death had a tendency to decided during the journey humans weren't ready to move on so he put them back where they came. Now this caused a lot of issues with decomposition. Leading to some humans looking very much like the apes of the world. So humans made a deal with death. They told death that if he were to bring them on the next leg of their journey he had to do so in one motion no back and forth. They also wished to never see death coming. Death said alright on one condition. If someone is ready to move on, but they still have a fate to carry out on this plane then I will be able to change my mind, and they will become like me when it is their time to truly journey on. The only way I will know this however is if that person can see me before I take them away. The humans agreed not wanting to argue with death now knowing he could take there lives at anytime without there being aware.
Now time passed and the humans did not pass down the story of the deal made with death so as time went on people began to fear death. They made up stories of something after death that could be or could not be there was no longer a certain, and slowly but surely death became irritated. Humans began living longer than their journeys were meant to be, because no one knew the truth behind death. Death also lonely for no one had yet to see him when he came began to lose hope because he would always be stuck at the in between. When he would take people to move on it was not so bad, because then for a while he had company. Still that never lasted long.
Millennia later humans fear death and the uncertainty it brings, and death is lonely and feels he will never remember what it was like to not be alone.
