I wake up startled, having no memory of what had been going on for the past few hours.
"Hello?" a male voice questions. He is hovering over my body with his palms planted on my shoulders.
"Um.." is all I manage to say. His presence is too close for my liking. A shiver goes down my spine as I stare into his ocean blue eyes.
"Can you get off of me?" I ask once I regain my senses.
"Oh sorry," he says as he backs up and lends a hand down to help me up. I take it hesitantly, thoughts whiz around my mind like a storm.
"Why are you out here? What are you doing? What happened to you? I haven't seen you before, are you the new boy in town?" he interrogates, not giving me time to recover from the awkwardness I felt just moments ago.
New boy? You must be joking.
"I'm fine, geez. I didn't know someone could be so outgoing. It's scary," I reply, brushing off the dirt from my tampered clothes and pulling the twigs out of my short black hair.
I look back at him as concern spreads across his face. He has blond hair, the same length as mine. It covers his forehead and the tips of his ears whereas mine covers my forehead, is swept to the left and covers half of my ear. His blue eyes reflect off of mine as he speaks once again.
"Where do you live?" his voice sends a shockwave of stress and anxiety shooting through my veins.
I hesitate before saying, "I live in town, that's all I'm saying," I start walking the same direction I was going before, I look up and see the sun beginning to set.
"You're going the wrong way," he says stopping me in my tracks.
"I know, I thought I might go for a stroll before I head home," I say, covering the embarrassment plastered on my face.
"It's getting dark, there's no time to go anywhere. Wolves live around here," the last statement made me freeze. There are others like me out here? I thought I would be alone this far away.
I turn around and walk in the other direction, "let's go then," and just like that we start our journey back to the stone village filled with the greedy and soulless.
We walked in utter silence, the only noise made between us was the breaking of twigs and the occasional tripping from the blond stranger. A few kilometers down and I could hear cars. The metal machines vibrate the air as they whiz past us, getting to their destinations as fast as possible. I hesitate before going beyond the silver chain that separates the small town from the deep green forest.
"Are you coming?" the blond stranger breaks the silence that has been lingering between us.
"Yeah, " is all I say as I am consumed once again into the abyss of my mind. What if the people that are like me, turn me in? What will I do now? I take a deep breath before stepping onto the cracked concrete.
"I'm Peter, by the way," he introduces himself, holding out his hand formally.
"Hadrian," I reply. I reach my hand over but instead of shaking his hand, I glide my palm against him and fist pump his. A look of confusion and then humor glides across his face.
I walk past him as I start to search the town for a place to sleep and escape this cruel reality. With Peter still by my side, I need to look like I'm actually going somewhere.
"This is my house." Peter stops and signals to a two-story high red building with a slanted black rooftop.
"That's nice," I smile, "I hope you have a nice sleep."
"You too," Peter says back. I turn around and continue my search for some sort of dumpster to throw myself into.
I look up to see a sign with the words 'Closed' covering the name of a school. It looked to be in the middle of nowhere with no houses surrounding it. Just trees and grass.
Perfect.
I make my way to the door and fiddle with the locks, using whatever is around me. Eventually, I hear that satisfying 'click' signaling that my mission is successful.
I enter the dark building and from what I could see, it appeared to be ancient, "this place is like 200 years old, just like High School Musical," I say to myself. I walk around, having my eyes adjusting to the darkness of the school.
I see the first classroom to my left and I unlock it. The desks are falling apart, but everything was eerily in perfect rows. I walk towards the place the teacher would have spent slaving away for hours. The teacher's desk still has graded papers from tests and quizzes. Under it was hollow enough space for me to crawl into and drift off into a deep sleep.
Before I gave into the aching feeling that revolved around my eyes, I decided to read the grades the kids received.
The first name was Hanna, she took a math test and received 61% in total. The next one was Jeremy, his paper read 81%, but something seemed off. His test was out of 27 and received 18 marks. His test result would have actually been 66%.
"Favouritism," I mutter before putting the pages back on the creaking desk and crawling under it. The floor was hard and cold, but at least I have a roof over my head.
My eyes took no time in closing and instantly, they started to water. My tears hit the floor slowly, making a tiny dripping sound.
The silence and darkness of the room carried me out and into the world of dreams. A dog barking is the last thing I heard before unconsciousness took me over for the second time today.
