Chapter 9

(Still Infinity's POV)

I slowly woke up, rubbing my eyes and sitting up. The first thing I noticed was that Toby wasn't next to me, or anywhere in sight. Then my gaze landed on the grey path, leading to Death's door. I shot up, sprinting forwards and following the path. Soon I saw a small figure, then a larger one, who was pointing to the opening door.

"Toby! Don't you even think about going through the door!" I yelled, running between him and the entrance.

Something slammed into my side, and I was flung away, landing painfully on the hard ground with the breath knocked out of me. I tried to move, but it caused more pain, and I let out a whimper, squeezing my eyes shut.

"Infinity?" Toby whispered worriedly, and I opened my eyes a little, then widening them as I saw Death about to grab him.

I summoned the past of my strength, ignoring the agony that it caused, and stood up, running forwards and shoving my shoulder, full force, into Death. It made him double over, but not move at all.

"Toby lets go!" I said to him, grabbing his hand and pulling him along behind me up the path.

I looked back, and saw with horror that the hooded figure was gaining on us, so I shoved Toby higher up and stood my ground, facing Death.

"Whatever you do, Toby, just keep running. And stay up there next time, okay?" I pleaded, eyes following my enemy's progress.

Death stretched out a hand to grab me, but I moved out of its way. The adrenaline boost had passed, and my legs gave way underneath me, making me sink to my knees.

"I'll make a deal. If you take me, you'll leave Toby alone, correct?" I looked at the shadows where it's face would be, holding out my hand. It shook it, and I smiled.

Together we walked side by side back down the path. I heard a cry behind me, but didn't want to look back. I had made a deal with Death, and couldn't break it. But at least Toby was safe this way.

"Infinity, what are you doing?!"

"You're safe now, Toby," I risked a look back, and saw that he was glowing slightly. "You're going back to Martyn. Say hi for me, okay?" Then Toby vanished, and it was just me, Death, and his door.

I looked at it, having to lift my head to see the whole thing, and it opened. Death nudged me forwards, and I took a deep breath, stepping through.

(Toby's POV)

I opened my eyes, and realised that I could see light, instead of the gloom in the land of Death. My shoulder hurt a little, but the pain quickly subsided, and as my eyes got used to the light I realised I was walking behind a man with a green shirt. Martyn!

"Martyn..." I whispered, taking in my surroundings.

He jumped, turning around, shock covering his face. "What?! But... huh?!"

Then I saw Infinity in his arms, and fell to my knees, crying.

"How are you... why is your shoulder... uh?" Martyn continued with the nonsensical talking.

"I'd rather not talk about it..." I murmured, getting up and wiping away the tears on my face.

"It's good to have you back, buddy. I missed you. Are you okay to continue?"

"Yeah. But look at you, have you even rested or eaten yet? You won't be able to continue yourself at this rate." I took Infinity from his arms, knowing this journey is a waste now. If only I'd listened to her and stayed, then she wouldn't have... "Martyn... there's no point in going on this journey. She... she won't come back..."

"What do you mean? We still have... uh, a day or two."

"She won't come back, Martyn. She made a deal with Death to bring me back... Oh! She said hi." I looked up to the sky, having seen something float past my face and disappear. It was starting to snow.

"Oh no..." Martyn mumbled, backing away from me. He was starting to turn blue and frosty.

"Stay yourself, Martyn. Don't let Inthelittlefrost take over. Do it for Infinity, for me." I tried to comfort him, slowly coming towards him.

"Get away! I don't want to hurt you!" He snapped, turning around and running off. "I'll meet you in the elf kingdom, hopefully I'll be fine."

I stopped following him, instead looked down at the girl in my arms. I felt so sorry for her, having robotic limbs, due to Rythian's ender side taking over. Giving a sigh that misted up the air, I started to jog towards the elf kingdom, hoping I could get there fast enough to revive her. It was my fault that she won't be able to come back anyway, but I may as well try to get there in the time limit.

As it began to get dark again, it became colder, and the small amount of snow that had fallen in short bursts had settled on the ground. I shivered, silently praying that Martyn was safe and he'd taken control of Inthelittlefrost. The feeling had long since left my fingers, and I was shaking uncontrollably, but I had to get to the elf kingdom. Even though I knew Infinity wouldn't come back to life, I still wanted to see the kingdom itself, especially after all the tales he told me about it. His eyes always seemed to shine a little green when he talked about it, but I never questioned it, assuming it just to be a trick of the light. But now I knew better, and the stories were true. My best friend was one of the last elves left.

I looked to the brightening sky, beginning to stumble in the snow, then tripped over something and fell face first. It was too cold to go on, but I still somehow found the energy to get up and keep walking. This time I kept my gaze on the ground, making sure that I didn't fall over again, and watched as the snow began to sparkle in the sunlight. I decided to look up again, but this time stop walking, and as I did so I noticed the strange scenery. From what I could see, there was a forest, a dormant volcano, a huge lake, and what looked like a few, thinning clouds, all of the things in separate areas. I glanced ahead, then laughed with glee to see some ruins, which made me grip Infinity tighter in my arms which were regaining feeling, before setting off in a speedy run. Soon I had arrived, and saw Martyn asleep, leaning his back against a crumbling pillar. I sat down next to him, laying Infinity down between us, before curling up to get some much-needed sleep.
